Topic: Fattening Formula?! Posted: 03 May 2011 at 7:27pm |
ok, so the little piglet was weighed by my midwife today and he's put on 400g in 4 days!! yaaaay. relief!!! 4 days ago he was still under birth weight at 3 ish weeks, NOT GOOD. Looks like me milk supply is terrible.
I'm on Domperidone prescription to try boost supply, making up Tiger Milk daily Tiger Milk to try help.
The Gremlin gets formula top ups after every breast feed and this has really helped weight gain.
Going supermarket shopping in a couple of days. Does anyone know what is a good formula? He's not on it full time so I can afford the best one! Is one better than others for weight gain? Or combination feeding?

Hi I'm sorry I can't help with the formula question but just wanted to say don't stress about baby taking a while to regain his birth weight. My first was the same, she lost way over 10% and was slow to gain initially and it was more about her not latching well rather than supply. She is a very healthy little girl now. Good on for your perservering. Hope someone can help you with the formula question.

breast fed babies do not gain as fast as formula fed babies, so dont get too worried about your supply. And the charts that plunket have are based on formula fed babies.

unfortunately, it's not just his weight loss that was the issue. he was trying to feed for 2 odd hours, when I put him down he'd wake 30 mins later starving again. He was doing this 24 hours a day for about a week before I couldn't cope anymore!!
I'm not with plunket yet, still under midwife. i've seen a lactation consultant and apparently I'm only getting the first milk let down, no others. the domperimide is supposed to help try bring on more milk let downs as well as more supply.
i'm going to keep working on my supply issues, keep offering him boob first but he really needs the formula top ups. poor baby

MerlinFluff, I don't know if this is the 'best' formula, but the one we used was Karicare HA (it's in an orange tin).
My son had feeding and weight gain issues and I chose this one for three reasons:
1) It has about 10% more calories than the other formulas (about 310 compared to 280 per 100ml)
2) As it is HA, it is designed for babies at risk of allergies, which means it's already partially broken down and therefore more gentle and easily absorbed by the baby (your baby doesn't actually have to be at risk to have this formula though)
3) It's not outrageously expensive like some of the specialist formulas (about 15% more expensive I think from memory).
We had a good time with this formula.
Congrats on your little one's weight gain!

Actually, it's pleasing to see that all the new Plunket books now have the WHO growth charts rather than the old NZ Plunket ones. Nice to have charts for healthy, breastfed babies.

And, just being a thread hog here, I am on domperidone for my second wee boy and things are going much better for me this time, so hopefully that will be your answer.
Good luck!

I had a similar issue with low weight gains initially, and did formula and EBM top ups. I have been using Heinz nurture starter and Emma has been chowing it down like a trooper!

The best formula we used is S26, the plain one, never had any issues with it
I did breast and bottle for my boy in the end as well as he was losing weight and getting dehydrated(ended up admitted to hospital for poor weight gain). Once on formula he thrived and I was a happy mama! - (I was quite sick after his birth though as it was an emerg cs with a lot of complications)
My daughter, she thrived on breast milk, gained weight beautifully (elective C Section)
