Topic: What are we allowed to eat? Posted: 14 May 2011 at 5:29pm |
Hello
I have recently found out that I am pregnant and so I have read a few articles about what we should and shouldn't be eating.
But does anyone have any advice?
Like should I eat a takeaway pizza from Domino's and can I have calamari at the Speights Ale House?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Pizza from Dominos will be fine just make sure if you are reheating that it's hot all the way through.
I can't think of any reason you can't have the calamari either.
The food thing is kinda hard when pregnant there are LOTS of "don'ts" and some are based in logic and hard science, some are precautionary and some are less so. I think one of the best pieces of advice I was given was "follow your nose and stomach and be sure of where it came from". Otherwise try to be sensible about it.
Best of luck with your pregnancy!

I say don't go over board on the what you cant eat thing as most of it is just common sense
For example, don't eat deli meats and anything that's not fresh or you don't know how long its been sitting out etc, sea food is a no no, sushi because of the rice(though I did eat some tuna sushi when pregnant last time, but only as they had just made it!) I've heard your not meant to eat poached eggs, but I lived on that through both my pregnancies!! Just made sure all the whites were cooked properly etc(like no clear bits left)
But yeah, use common sense and you'll be fine! I basically eat what i want apart from the things above

You've probably seen this, but I use it as a basic guideline.
I tend to be what I consider over-cautious, but I would still eat chicken pizza provided it was piping hot. I'd probably eat the calamari too (but have to admit I tend to steer clear of seafood - even though piping hot it should be fine - so I'd probably just choose something else).
The general gist is that most things are fine if really really hot. I miss sushi most of all when I'm pregnant - last time Dh had a standing order to bring me some as soon as Jacob was born

Pretty sure you have to make sure the yolks are cooked through with eggs, runny eggs are a big no no....sure some people can eat them at be fine, that's the nature of a risk... just means there is a risk there of food poisoning that has potentially very serious consequences for baby... so sure you can take the risk and most of the time you will be fine, but you won't know which time you might not be...definitely not a risk I saw as worth taking ...

Thanks Hopes
I had not seen that list. Will put it on the fridge.
Don't have a great appetite but craving prawns - which I know are a no no.
Think it is a case of wanting what I cannot have.
Thanks for the advice everyone.

The main risk with eggs is when they are raw, so thats why you cant have Aioli(sp?) and mayo that has raw eggs in it and why you shouldnt eat cookie dough etc(even though its so yummy). To me, poached eggs are cooked, I cook mine very well, like I said, no clear bits and I make sure the yolk is thick etc, so I am very comfortable with that and see no major risk. I evenr ead you shouldnt eat scrambled eggs, which Is stupid as they are cooked well!
Thats why I say, its common sense, and I have never gone overboard on the food thing, but Im not stupid, Im not about to go out and eat deli ham or drink a raw egg etc

*lurking*
I think it should be up to the individual what they eat.. if Sheza is wants to eat eggs and knows of the risks.. but cooks them to a good standard then so be it...

I agree it all comes down to the risk you are willing to take. I think most hot takwaway foods are ok. Salads are something to be careful of i.e. Subway, but again its the risk you are willing to take.
I eat deli ham, but only in a hot toasted sandwich.
I have this one I find helpful and on my fridge. Nice and easy to follow.

In starvation on Friday night at the inlaws, I ate dominos pizza and they were all meat ones (chicken, ham & pineapple, prawn & bacon etc) and they weren't exactly hot when they arrived. On my way home I then realised what I'd just done!!! I feel ok (not sick etc) but for me personally, I'll just go back to vego pizzas, just to be safe.

With deli meats if I put them in the microwave just before making a sandwich would I be ok? I'm in love with shaved ham and I don't know how I'll live without it. I have this scenario in my mind...
Cut and wash veges (tomato, lettuce, cucumber and capsicum) and put in a clean tuppaware. Put ham in a separate tuppaware and bread in a third tuppaware. Take all this to work. Microwave the ham to piping hot, then construct a sandwich and eat it.
Would that be safe?

Rhondda that is perfectly fine to eat ... as you say you'll be washing the veges and heating the ham to piping hot, so no problem

Rhondda yep I have heard heated deli meat is totally fine. Otherwise all I have been doing is buying the sealed ham/chicken that you can buy near the deli. Cos I like my meat cold and it came in two sandwich sized packs so would just break off one to take to work
Can't say that I have been the best at avoiding all the 'bad' foods though, it just gets too hard to remember all of them... I don't like seafood or eggs anyway though! I do miss V
