    Posted: 05 October 2006 at 1:59pm
ARGH! By kiddie number three you'd think that we'd be almost ready for anything, but yesterday at 1.30pm Connor brought up fresh blood after a feed. We took him to see our Dr (after phoning the hospital for advice) and she said it was probably from my breast and not to worry too much, but since I had been having Voltaren for after pains it could be a reaction to that passed through the milk. To play it safe (and to give my nipples a chance to heal from the battering they had received) we decided to feed Connor infant formula for 24 hours while I used the breast pump to keep supply up. So, 4pm feed time comes along and Connor takes 15 - 20mls of formula before going as white as a sheet, passing out and not responding. I undressed him, rubbed him, pinched his foot where the heel prick test was, waved his arms around and nothing. AARRGH!!!! Hubby was onto 111 straight away and an ambulance was sent out. Luckily they were here within 5 minutes as Connor was just starting to 'pink up' again, but still not all that responsive. His first cry was in the back of the ambulance on the way to Starship (the BEST sound I've ever heard) and after an hour he was back to his squirming 4 day old self. After tests and specialists, it seems that Connor is alergic to milk proteins found in formula. Starship have told us to avoid all formula (cows, goat and soy) as that kind of reaction would probably occur with all of them and a second reaction is usually worse than the first. We've been referred to the immunology specialist to try and sort out what the heck happened and I've been told to keep the breastfeeding - any blood from the nipples will just be extra iron for him! Since I had supply issues with Andrew and couldn't breast feed him for long, I now have every potion, pill and supplement available on hand to keep the supply up. If supply plays up we have to go back to Starship for them to work out what to do. Needless to say, Nick and I are taking turns watching him while he sleeps.

Oh no, good thing the ambulance came so fast. Good thing they have told you what is wrong and you can act on it now.
I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Oh my Maree...how scary!! Gosh!! Thank God you guys kep your cool and handled it so well....I would have been a mess!

Thank God he is ok and you know whats wrong with him!

Try eating almonds....I do every day. It helps make milk and makes it nice and thick and fatty (so I hear
)

Works with me (not that I had a supply problem)...but I did notice how it changed in thickness.....worth a try right!!

OMG Maree, I am so pleased he is OK. Just reading your recount made me feel sick and put a lump in my throat.

Take care of you, and if you need anything at all please don't hesitate to ask (even if it is a run to the shop for some bread)

That is really scary Maree. You and hubby did really well by the sounds. Glad they were able to tell you what was wrong and he is ok now. Does that mean you have to avoid milk proteins as well? If you do, get a referral to see a dietician. Fingers crossed that your milk supply keeps up.
