Hi girls,

My MW has prescribed amoxicillin as I have strep b, just wondered if others have taken this during their pregnancy ?

This pregnancy I have been so so careful and not taken any medication, during my first pregnancy I was on antibiotics for about a month and that ended very badly. Hence I'm nervous about taking them and just want some reassurance that all will be ok

Thanks in advance x

I had to take a course of antibiotics for an infection from my wisdom teeth when pregnant with DS. I don't recall what it was, but it wasn't amoxicillin.
Anyway, it had no ill effects on either DS or I

Do you have any symptoms from your Group B strep? If not, I'd question why you need to take the ABs at all?

I had Group B strep a few years ago (well before getting UTD) and I was told that it would only be an issue if I got pregnant as ABs are required in labour...
When I did get pregnant, I told my midwife and even though the Group B strep was not present while pregnant I was given IV penicillin during labour 'just-in-case' as if it is present it can pass to the baby during labour and cause respiratory problems, amongst other things.
Group B strep is one of those things that could be there one day and gone the next so even if you take the ABs now it could be back next week anyway...

Is that what you mean - Group B strep?

I've had amoxicilin this pregnancy, it's one of the safest antibiotics to be used in pregnancy. I had a sinus infection. The Dr said that the infection would be more of an issue than the medication would be.

Thanks for the responses!

Aww T Rex thanks - not long for you now

Jaune - my mw originally said to leave it until I go into labour, but then she referred me to a Obstetrician and he said to treat it now, even though they will still treat it in labour. I read that it comes and goes so thought it was a bit strange to treat it now.

Hrm, not sure wether to take it or not.....

I had it for a chest infection in my first pregnancy with no issues.

What are the risks of Strep B *during* pregnancy? That's probably the bigger question...

Not me but my sister took it for a kidney infection during the first trimester and it was fine. Maybe have a chat to your MW about your concerns and whether it really is necessary to take it.

I'm on amoxicillin at the moment for a throat and sinus infection. GP said a prolonged infection is much more dangerous for both me and bubs than a course of amoxicillin would be. Don't worry about it lovely

I was put on AB's while I was preggers with Jacob, I think I was between 28-30weeks by then.  I can't remember which one I was on tho, but as you know, Jacob is perfectly fine

Yes it is safe to take during pregnancy however I can't. Any thing like that within 48 hours I am horribly sick. As in vomiting ever 30 minutes.
With my first son I had a urinary infection (no symptoms) and I was so ill I almost ended up in hospital. Even after I finished the course I never completely got over it. At 4 months I was able to work 6 hours a day for one day a week. Could not manage more than that though.
So now unless it is absolutely nesicary I avoid anything like antibiotics. But you need to look at what is worse. Most people have no reaction.

How did they pick up that you had it so early? I thought they only swabbed for it around 34?? weeks or some where about that time?

I had it for my first pregnancy and got AB's via drip in labour.

Thank you lovelies ( Esp Jacobsmumma)

AandCsmum - I had a swab and urine samples tested due to spotting in early pregnancy and my MW was ruling other other infections which can cause that, but nothing else showed up. Strep b doesn't cause spotting, so I'm just one of many who randomly does.

There are no risks of strep b when pregnant, so yes seems odd to treat it. In the past I have been prone to UTIs, ESP when pregnant and getting UTIs coupled with strep b poses a higher risk going into labour.

Other thing is I have a lot of strep b, usually it only shows on swab and not in urine, but mine shows in urine so I have a high colonisation maybe thats why I've been prescribed it .. Hrm.

Thanks for responses lovely ladies x

I tested positive for GBS through a urine sample and was prescribed antibiotics when I was preg with my son. (Also highly prone to UTIs).
