I'm a teacher and am due very close to the school holidays. I am wondering whether maternity leave can start after the baby is born, that way I can get paid through the holidays, and then start leave.

When looking at the entitlements for adoptive parents it goes on about day that you assume care, so I am assuming that at least for PPL it will be from the date of birth (at the latest) as for other information in regards to starting your 12 months unpaid leave, it is probably best to talk to your union (assuming you are a member of PPTA or NZEI) as they will have more of an idea on the ins and outs of it all (and what may be in your contract that is more than the minimum provided by law)

Thanks spitfire! I think I will have to wait until second trimester rolls around and then discuss with payroll :)

Hi MorethanReady

Congrats!

I am a teacher too (secondary) although on maternity leave now.

Your leave starts when you and the BoT agree on a date, so because you are due before the holidays, they will have to replace you for the teaching time you are not there. Hope that makes sense.

That means you will have to pick a date and have that as your last day, and first day of leave.
I don't know if you are primary or secondary, or how long you even want off, but my situation was:

I had to finish at 34 weeks due to complications and the BoT agreed to let me leave 3 weeks earlier than planned.
I had asked for one year off- so August 2012 to August 2013.
I have just asked and been given an extension so I return for Term 1 next year. This extension needed to be asked within 9 months of original leave, and up to the BoT's discretion.

Not sure if this helped at all!

Hey teacherlady, thanks. It's a shame I can't take a couple of weeks sick leave to take me to the end of the term. I'm due about a week before the end of term providing all goes well. I doubt they would want me back the following year at that time anyway, they are more likely to want me at the start of the teaching year. I primary based by the way, hopefully planning to have a year off.
