Topic: Ive lost the battle of the dreaded... Posted: 13 November 2006 at 3:06pm |
dummy
Mercedes has had one since she came out of hospital but I have stubbornly persisted with not giving one to Sienna because I hate them, and because I don't want to have issues getting rid of the dummies later on.
But I have started feeling mean about letting Sienna cry herself to sleep and pacifying Mercedes with a dummy coz it doesn't seem fair, plus the Plunket nurse managed to convince me that sucking is really comforting for babies and to let her have one only when she is in the cot and to lose it by 12 weeks. She also thinks it might help resettle the girls if they wake too often during the night (atm I get one 3.5-4 hour stretch and the rest are 2.5 hours) as she said they aren't hungry when they wake, just need to be resettled.
Bugger.

Dont sweat it. Lissy gave up her dummy really easy at around the 12 week mark, although it was replaced with her fingers. We are still battling them.

You do what you need to! My mum lives by the "is it life threatening?" rule... ask yourself that question in any given situation, and providing the answer is 'no' then have no fear!
Getting rid of dummies has been done before... cross that bridge when you come to it.

LOL Deborah - Maya does THINK she wants one...
Maria - at least Alyssa can't lose her fingers, I live in fear of the day we lose Fussy Bubba
Nikki - loving the "is it life threatening" - I guess not...

I was the same with my 1st daughter. I swore no dummy blab blab but after 2wks of no sleep, A friend of mine brought me one over and said try it. Yay it worked and i weaned her from dummy and breast at the same time. Then when I had my daughter Mercedes it was one of the first things I brought, thinking I might need it. I even packed it in my labour bag to take to hosp hehehe. Turned out she wouldnt take it at all. Now with the arrival of my son SOON I again have a new dummy JUST IN CASE!!!

i was on the hate dummy brigade too. now I worship them! if they had feetm, I'd kiss them.
BTW Jake gave up his at 7 months (we lost all the ones he had and he only wanted a specific brand we could only get from a certain store in Aus) - no probs at all.

I didn't go for dummies either but I'm convinced it was right for Briona.... Hannah is a finger-sucker but Briona has been weaned, although lately has taken to sucking the ribbon on her doll which is fast turning brown
And like Nikki said, "Getting rid of dummies has been done before... cross that bridge when you come to it."

I didnt want to give Isla one either Emma,..but it definatly helps to re-settle her when she wakes. Anything to have her sleep a wee bit longer! We figure that its what she needs now,..and we will worry about the consequences of possibly having trouble weaning her off it,..if and when it happens.

I did'nt want to give piper one either but now find it a god-send and would'nt be without it (will worry about weaning off it later) but she settles more easily now with it

i agree with you all.......if that's what it takes to have a settled baby, so be it!
jack never needed/wanted a dummy but charli settles herself alot easier with one and i wouldn't be without it!

I took the dummies away again this morning. When they went back to bed after their 7am feed the pair of them spent over an hour spitting them out and crying for them to be put back in. So I got cross and left them to cry it out and they slept much better, and after their 1pm feed they hardly cried at all and are now fast asleep.
Will see how tonight goes tho - at 3am I might gladly plug them in just to get some sleep!

I was kinda anti-dummies until I had a baby! Ella was born to suckle, and she has a dummy to settle her to sleep sometimes (she's random about when she needs it and when she doesn't)... it's been a godsend. GO THE DUMMIES!!!
My sis rekons in the States they call them "binkies" - that's so much better than the word 'dummy' (for something that's clearly a genius invention!).
