Topic: Sienna had her kidney scan take two Posted: 01 December 2006 at 7:57pm |
And I swear it is the last test I am letting her have. Every time the results seem to get worse. Antenatally her kidney was 6mm dilated, at the first scan it was 7mm and today it was 8mm.
And on top of that they confirmed that her bladder is refluxing back into her kidney, and her ureter (sp) is also dilated and obstructed.
And to get all of this lovely information they put her in a box like a coffin, tied her hands above her head and stuck a catheter in her. She was an angel and slept the whole time (with a dummy in her mouth)while I howled my eyes out. I can honestly say it's right up there with the most horrible experiences of my life.
We see the specialist on Monday to dissect the results and I am feeling more than a little frustrated coz no one will give me a definite answer on what happens next and I know a lot about a lot of things but kidneys are not one of them.
Blah. Rant over. I just feel so icky.

OK so I stayed away from Google, but I did look up the Kidney Kids NZ website and then wished I hadn't. The scan report described her reflux as "at least Grade IV" which I thought didn't sound too bad on a scale of 1-5, except that I have now discovered that 1 is the mildest and 5 is the worst so hers is up the higher end. It describes Grade IV as "Moderate dilation, loss of sharp calyceal fornices" whatever that means and says that usual treatment is antibiotics for a couple of years with follow ups every 3 or so months and that Grades III-V sometimes need surgery.
I guess what freaks me out the most is that I said to the radiology doctor "oh she'll be fine, the paed said they hardly ever have to do surgery" and the radiology doc looked at me kind of concerned and said "I don't know why he would tell you that", like maybe its worse than I think?
Oh I so over think things.

I have a work mate (at my last work place) that had the same problem with her little boy, he was quite bad apparently but is now a terror of a 10 year old, you want me to give her a ring and see what her story was Emma?
*bughugs* I hope it gets better!

hi Emma
I am a renal nurse although my patients are about 10-20 times the size of Sienna, I looked at the Kidney Kids site for the info on reflux and at this point it is fairly comprehensive, generally antibiotic therapy, but main need some surgery in the future to re inplant the ureters (tubes which take the urine from the kidney to the bladder) The calyceal fornices is to do with the area of the kidney where the urine collects before going into the ureter, and the sharp angle means that it cannot drain straight away but pools in the kidney and some urine may move back to the kidney because of a similar problem at the junction of the ureter and bladder, like a traffic jam of urine, this urine stagnates and you get a UTI (urine tract infection). The antibiotics keep the urine sterile, preventing urine and most importantly kdiney infections.
take what I say with a pinch of salt, as I say I don't deal with littlies, they scare me, but feel free to ask questions, even if I have to google it, not so scary if I do it, I can translate it into english, hopefully.
also sorry you are having to go through this

Thanks That kind of sounds like what the doctor said yesterday but in English. They were all mumbling and muttering while they did the actual MCU but then afterwards he didn't have so much to say.
I guess I will wait and see what the specialist says, but am going to write down any questions I think of so I don't forget them.

Write things down as you think of them as you think of them, so you can refer to your list while you are there, and if you don't understand the answers make them explain in english so you know exactly where you are heading. If you don't feel comfortable with the answers or treatments, ask again for further expalanations or alternatives. You know what you feel comfortable with as her mum, so you now what will be right for you baby
Good luck on Monday, will think of you
Claire
