Topic: Horrible HORRIBLE week. Posted: 24 January 2007 at 11:35am |
BIG RANT coming up.
As I might have mentioned somewhere on here, I've had a few dental problems over the past month or two, nothing which I can't handle with most people saying they will pass or if it gets any worse, go and see a dentist.
So on monday my teeth started feeling a bit sore, only on the left side, which is where the pain always is, so I thought, 'oh no, not again, I hope it goes away', well it bloody didn't and by monday night I was down at the emergency room screaming from pain. They gave me some codeine to take there, and some for the morning and I said I would try and get into the dentist. Well the codeine didn't work. I had a sh*tty sh*tty night of crying and being in god-awful pain. Then in the morning at about 6am, I took the rest of the codeine. This made me feel slightly better. DP took the day off work to look after me and ring the dentist. I got into the emergency slot at 12:30. So I thought, 'ok, I'll try and get some sleep'. Well at about 10am, I woke up feeling horribly nauseas and sick (Must have been the codeine). Went to the dentist..
Turns out my wisdom tooth at the back on the top has grown in at a funny angle and is SEVERELY infected and decayed and has a huge abcess in it. He said 'Oh, it has to come out.. now'.
So I thought 'ok, fine, get it out, I don't care'. He proceeded to give me about 20 anaesthetic injections, all of which gave me a numb cheek and didn't do anything for the pain. While he had his hands in my mouth, I started feeling really sick so I THREW UP. I warned him first and had to do it in that little sink, and the poor nurse had to fish it out (sorry TMI). Then he tried to pull my tooth. None of the pain had gone away, so I SCREAMED really loudly, I couldn't help it. He had to kindly warn me that the people in the waiting room wouldn't feel comfortable with someone screaming'. So the tooth couldn't come out. He could hardly reach it, and he couldn't get it successfully anaesthatised. So nothing happened at the dentist for $110. He rang my doctor to ask what she thought they could do for me, as being pregnant makes it kinda tricky. They decided to put me on antibiotics for a week for the infection to go away then he can get the tooth out with no pain. So I was sent home with a $40 prescription, and we had no money, so DP had to go into his work and ask his boss for an extention. I feel so bad for him, as he spent the whole day looking after me and I was screaming all day.
So we got the prescription, went home, I took the antibiotics and the codeine, tried to eat, as it all had to be taken with food, then tried to go to bed. Slept for maybe half an hour at the most as I felt kinda sick. Threw up twice then spent ages just lying there sobbing.
Then later that evening I took more antibiotics, but decided to lay off the codeine as I thought that was making me sick.
Turns out I was having an allergic reaction to the antibiotics, and spent four hours late last night VIOLENTLY vomiting out on the back porch into a bucket as my stomach wouldn't stop retching until it had gotten rid of everything.
So now I'm too terrified to take my antibiotics, and the codeine too, because I'm so sick of throwing up and feeling like sh*t. Now I'm back to square one.
They say I might have to be sent to Hamilton to be put under general for them to get the tooth out, which is not what they want because of baby.
I'm so miserable, I can't wait for this pain to be over so I can enjoy my pregnancy again. I had like three weeks of feeling so great and 'blooming', now it's all turned to sh*t again.
If you're still reading, thanks. I really needed to get this out.

oh huney! i know how you feel as i seem to go through this every few months! it was like reading my own story!! - mine would always get bad at night and id end up in A&E all night screaming! then hubby would have to look after me while i screamed and moaned all day and night! because it certainly is excruciating and to be honest i would much rather go through labour again than have that kind of pain! one time i got it on a new years day and had to pay $250!!! to see an after hours doctor on a public holiday!
Mine to is an absese under my wisdom tooth so i totally feel your pain and cringed when i read your familiar story
Only me being a chicken! - have not gone to a dentist and just take the medication everytime and now have spares for strange hours of the night!! (yip i know - naughty!)
I hope you feel better soon and you can get your tooth pulled. Hang in there, i know it sux like nothing else!

I hope they find a way to deal with the pain without harming bubs...
BTW can / should you take codeine while pregnant??? its pretty serious stuff....
HUGS hon...

Thanks everyone for your lovely kind words.
I'm feeling a lot better now. The pills have stopped making me feel so sick so I can at least get some sleep at night.
I'm going to have the tooth pulled on tuesday, and hopefully they will be able to do it without pain.
At least my little boy seems fine. He kicks away all the time to make me feel better.

Yup, codeine is fine in pregnancy - it is why panadiene is ok. Of course you wouldn't want to take it every day for 9 months!
Glad you are feeling better eomachine, hope it goes well next week.

Hi eomachine, sounds like you had a pretty rough time. My DH is a dentist, and just to let you know that when you have an infection it is quite common for local anaesthetic not to work, so I am not surprised you were in a lot of pain. Hopefully by the time you go in to get it out the antibiotic will have worked and the anaesthetic will be able to make your tooth numb. Talk about bad timing though you poor thing
As for codeine, it is probably the safest thing in more severe pain but should not be taken without medical advice. This also goes for panadeine. Panadol is perfectly fine without medical advice.
Other thing about codeine is that it can constipate you so you may experience that too.

oh Renee ouch,I hope they get it out for you.
I remember getting all four of my wisdom teeth out and I wasnt pregnant, but the pain I had form one tooth before it came out was horrible.
You will feel so much better once its out.
Codeine makes me sick so does voltaren so I can only take panadol for pain relief.
Big hugs for you and hope all goes well

I haven't had it done yet! I went to my appointment in Hamilton that my dentist in Thames referred me for on Tuesday (thought I would stay with mum for a couple of days while I get it done) and I was only in there for five minutes. I thought they were going to pull it out, but he said he wouldnt do it till next wednesday!
Thankfully I'm not in any pain anymore, but it's still gotta come out.
The worst part is I don't get to see DP until the weekends as I'll be over here until it's done and he'll be in Thames.
But it's nice to be rid of the pain! For now.
