Topic: Why did you go cloth? (if you have) Posted: 18 March 2007 at 9:14am |
I'm just curious on this as I've had a few conversations over the past few months and each has been different
We started to use cloth nappies to basically save money, now I think it's more of an excuse to SPEND money and they look so gorgie too! The environmental issue is a given as we are doing our bit to reduce waste but I'm honest enough to say that was just an added bonus for us

I have never liked disposables...and even though im not a greenie i dont like knowing that i am contributing to the problem as such...in saying that ...Rhiannon is in disposables at the moment as this new forumla has given her really bad nappy rash...and as i am in the new cloth nappies...and want to lather on nappy cream...disposables seemed the best option.
Also cloth was a lot cheaper...and they can be reused over and over.

we are using disposables on haleigh but that was jsut because we didnt know much about cloth then. number 2 will be in cloth we will be using old fashioned but will get some MCN for when hes not so newborn and for when we are out and at nights.
I have to say we are making the switch 1: the cost, 2: to save our waste we make in a week, 3: the smell (I hate the smell of rubbish with nappies in them).

We are going cloth because of the $$ savings. And also that Palmy has just had it's landfill closed down so getting rid of rubbish is only going to cost more and more here. Plus they are far more nicer looking than disposables!

I think they're cute!! Plus it will save $$ in the long run. I also like the idea of not having such a full rubbish bag

It was right when I was getting REALLY over my smelly rubbish and then just seeing them sealed the deal. The costs savings were also a big one.
I saw cute little small fuzzis and was able to feel how damn soft they were! And the snaps! Perfect timing as Han has just started to open the tabs on sposies and she couldn't work the snaps.
All in all, a choice I don't regret

Price was a major for us too, and considering we still want more children, we expect to be able to reuse them a lot! Now I'm glad that we don't have messy nappies sitting around any longer than a day, and the FB look really cute!!

Okay first dont want to sound rude or anything. Just really curious as I did all the sums ect.
We did look into cloth when I was pregnant and ran the numbers and it just didnt add up. Even worst case scenario disposables will work me out cheaper. It was only going to start saving money on the second kid. So have to buy unisex ones.
And again when we got over here and I hear all the people say it is saving money I ran the numbers again and it just doesnt add up to me.
So what is your girls calculations? Maybe I am missing something.
We are ooming about some cloth with the next one but that is more to do with environment than anything else to be quite honest with you.

We started looking into MCN because I dont like all the rubbish with diaposables. Then we discovered we would be saving money (in the long run) so that made us decide MCN were for us. We also love how soft they are, how dry they keep Isla, and that they have no chemicals like the gel in disposables. And of course they look fab,...great in summer with just a t-shirt!
We got mostly unisex colours so we can use again with next baby (if we have a boy he will be wearing bubblegum pink fuzzi's at night!!)
We almost got put off using MCN by all the choice! I did so much research into all the types and brands it was driving me nuts trying to decide!

Tee hee same here!
I just remembered the other reason that helped convince me... FB look so easy to use, and I was going to be doing washing every day anyway with three kids, already.

Toni am I correct in saying you are a FB agent?? I did not make it to the MCN thingy at the council out West last weekend but would like to know if you could perhaps meet with me and go through your product, find out costs, how many to get etc? I am quite keen to go with MCN as I hate the fact disposables destroy our environment! Thinking about it, I probably should have PM'd you! TIA!

Smoody - it's not just the overall cost of cloths but then later on the resale value of nappies like fuzzi's are amazing so you get back a heck of a lot of the money you put in.

I just did some quick sums and got this:
1 child for 2 years in fuzzi(24 fuzzi, 2 sizes, 12 each)
Per week we spend about $10.43
2 kids for 2 years each in fuzzi,
Per week over both kids $6.59.
Thats cost of buying naps, water, power, powder and whitner. we don't have a dryer.
Then after all that they can be sold on TM.

Thanks for all of your replies ladies and gents, this was just a bit of personal research after the weekends expos
A lot of people "assume" you only go cloth with your nappies if you're a staunch greenie which apparently isn't the case
Thanks again

we went cloth with xanthe purely for the cost factor, and i had seen my sil doing it and she managed fine, so thought i would have no problems. I used cloth flats and scuzzy covers but managed fine with them, and saved a LOT of money! i just discovered mcns toward the end of nappy use with xanthe, and started getting a couple to trial.
With jordis i am using them about 90% of the time so far, hope to go to 100% soon, but need a few more to have enough to take into account washing and drying time. they arent quite as cheap as the cloth flats, but it is definately saving on our weekly grocery shop. and the resale factor is good too. All in all i love using them, they are no extra hassle to use and i have fun showing people what is available now.

Obviously! I am the worlds biggest consumer (yes, Gsmum was horrified when she was here the other day and I threw an empty Palmolive bottle into the bin instead of the recycling . It's not that I don't care about the environment - I'm just essentially lazy!
So why cloth for us? I used flats, pins and covers with Maya during the day and disposables at night and they were fine, did the job and saved heaps considering the initial outlay was $90 for the flats and the only recurring cost was a few $$$ for covers as she grew and for liners and washing powder etc.
Stubbornly resisted MCN with the gremlins, started off planning to use flats from 6 weeks till I realised they were getting thru a $50 box of Huggies a week between them So started with the flats at 2 weeks, and started hunting for better covers. At the same time went hunting for cloth trainers for Maya, Gsmum pointed me towards Snazzipants and the rest is history!
The ironic thing is if I started using cloth to save money, I certainly haven't - I have 50+ nappies of different styles/colors/prints etc. which has cost me way more than disposables would have short term, but long term factoring in resale will actually save me heaps.
Plus as I keep telling Willie at least if we go bankrupt I can always sell some nappies to keep us afloat - they're like an asset almost

i started using cloth with charli to save $$ mostly. jack's still in nappies and the thought of having them both in disposables made me
i've spent about $450 on nappies for BOTH kids and i wash every 2nd day. jack was going through $35 worth of disposables every fortnight and charli was going through $25 a fortnight. we've been full time cloth for 3mths now i'm definately alot better off. i also use cloth wipes so i'm no longer spending $7/wk on them
the best thing about MCN is the resale value. i've got most of my nappies on TM or from WAHM's, i don't pay much more than $20 for a nappy as there is no need to. i have some on TM at the moment for sale and i'm not going to lose much on them. now all i need to do is STOP BUYING MORE!!!

The cost of 2 babies in disposables scared me enough to look into cloth again. (I'd tried it briefly with Ella in flats with pins and was way too lazy to maintain it)
After reading about the MCN's you guys were using on here it seemed like an easy enough switch, and I'm glad to say it was!
