Do you use in home childcare?
Has anyone used PORSE network home based childcare?
Would you use it?
How does it compare to outside the home childcare?
Not sure if this is the right forum.

I haven't, but one of my friends is a PORSE nanny. She used to work in a childcare centre, but prefers to be more one on one. She does individual programmes for the kids and is always on the go going here there and everywhere with them!
Not cheap though, as I know she is on $20 an hour.

I have a friend who is using PORSE but her DD is 20mos (been with them since DD was 18mos). She loves it.
If I went back to work (unlikely) then I'd seriously look into PORSE. They have a max number of children (4) per person to look after, including their own, and there is a focus on development and learning.

I am Kelly's(caitlynsmygirl) mum and I look after Caitlyn as a Porse family educator here in Howick Auckland I am also trained as a karitane and Nanny,
I am trying to get more children to look after here in my home as a Porse Educator when Caitlyn goes to school but I would only charge $6 an hour not $20.
If I was in Someones home as a trained Karitane/Nanny I would charge $15 to $18 an hour

Do you use in home childcare? Nope my eldest goes to daycare and my youngest will go there as well next year
Has anyone used PORSE network home based childcare? Nope my friend looked into it when she finished her degree (early childhood education)
Would you use it? If I wasn't studying maybe but I like my set up I have.
How does it compare to outside the home childcare? I don't know that much about it. I'm the type of person that want her children to be looked after and cared for by fully qualified people and our daycare is now 90% qualified so i'm happy with that. And I like that there are a variety of teachers at daycare.

be careful of in home childcare...i have a lady up the road who is a porse carer and all day she carts the kids round in any weather to deliver her pamplets rain or shine. another carer i have seen with several kids left them in the van while she went to the bank...now that might be ok if they were her own kids but it isnt something you might agree on...and i think when it is in home care there are less checks in place to ensure the chid is being cared for appropriatley.
Not of course that that would apply to all in home carers...

i am a in home childcarer and i really injoy doing it have been doing it for the last 3 years. thay can only have 4 kids at one time and only 2 under two at one time you just have to look for a company that have regular home safety checks. we have two ladies that check up on us unanounced so you never know when thay are comming. as well the carer should have a open home policy when your kids are i care you can pop in anytime to make sure that every thing is ok. thay should also take your kids to a playgroup which is usually run by the company. and if you dont like the person or your kid dosent you can always ask to meet a differnt person. the choice is yours there shouldnt be any pressure put on you to take the first person you meet.

I don't use childcare but think PORSE is a win-win situation if you get a good caregiver. I guess the priorities for me would be safety, knowing who is caring for my child and what qualifies them to do so, knowing who else may be around my child, and being sure that it was an environment where my girl wouldn't come into contact with anything containing milk solids... I think that the severity of her food allergy might be asking a bit much of a daycare centre.

Do you use in home childcare?
I seriously looked into it when it was looking like I had to go back to work after Andrew was born. Instead, we've gone for KinderCare
Has anyone used PORSE network home based childcare?
That's who I looked into. It's pretty similar to other home based childcare schemes. You find your own nanny/childcare worker or they can assist. You are responsible as the employer, which means that you are contractually obliged to provide a good workplace, paid sick leave, paid annual leave etc. just like any other employer.
Would you use it?
No, I had enough issues dealing with staff when I was paid to, don't want to have to pay for that all over again. I also think that daycare centres are better equiped. There are more trained adults around, more activities, more routine, more regulations. KinderCare where my boys will be going caters really well for food allergies - they have no milk or meat products (Connor is allergic). It's also REALLY expensive when you have to factor in hiring someone else to cover when your nanny is on annual leave (that you're paying for)
How does it compare to outside the home childcare?
I personally prefer outside of the home childcare (as above), but that also depends on finding an amazing centre. Check out the ERO reports, talk to other parents, get all the information you possibly can and then make a decision. Good Luck.

I know Katherine uses in-home childcare for Emma Rose, not sure if it is with Porse or another similar agency but it seems to work for her.
I personally wouldn't put my girls in in-home daycare, partly coz you don't know what goes on all day when there's no-one else around, and partly coz I like the socialisation aspects of daycares.
I'm semi-looking into getting a nanny for the gremlins, I have a friend who has offered to take them for two days a week in July when her daughter starts school, but I'm still thinking I'd rather have them here in their own cots etc. But even with the subsidy we're entitled to I'd be paying $11 an hour which is a fair chunk of my income

I have a 10month old who has been in care part time since he was 4 months old. We went with the inhome care because our son was so little and we thought he was always sick with a cold....turns out it was allergies. I looked at 4 companies and went to visit 5 carers. Barnadoes were $4.50 per hour Jemmas were $4.00 per hour Amanda's were $6.50 per hour Porse were $7.00 per hour
I went with Porse, our carer is just the BEST. I could not ask for anything more for my son. His carer has a daughter who is a couple of months older than Tyrell. They are just the best of mates and it has been so nice to see them grow together. Now when they see each other they crawl as fast as they can to each other and give each other a kiss hello....just so cute.
Porse check on the carer and children once a month without fail. The carer is able to get their certificates, degree through them.
My advise is to look at all of them as each company is different but so are their carers. The thing that got me was some of them just treat it as a job they had no feeling about what they are doing. For us our carer is just full of love and affection and attention and.......everything. She is the only 1 that when I went to visit wanted to hold and interact with Tyrell.....might have been what got me.....
I am sure I could go on all day about our carer but I think I may have answered your questions.....

As a Porse carer, I definetly dont take children out and leave them in the car when i go to the bank,
The places I would take them are my own church playgroup, porse playgroup and music and movement.
I prefer one to one care for children or two at the most.
Trained Karitanes and Nannies are just as well trained as qualified daycare staff.
Definitley advantages in both,
I think also colds more prevelant in daycare
Home care the children still get social interaction by going to the things like music and movement and playgroups.

That's what got me with the nanny I had when the gremlins were tiny. She came to interview one afternoon when they were 10 days old, and immediately offered to help feed/change them and get them back to bed, and that was what sold me on her. She was brilliant the whol 9 weeks I had her, and comes back from time to time to visit and see how they're all doing.

We send Piper to a in home programme here in taranaki called the kids care team and she loves going there they have so much fun sometimes when I go to pick her up she doesnt want to come home. I did look into daycare but the waiting list in stratford was 2 years and Piper loves nicki so I'm happy she is there at the moment and the other kid kid she is there with is the DD of a friend of ours so they have great times together

When I went back to work when Jake was 6 months old, all I could get into here for an under 2 was Bernardos. I had been recomended it anyhow, and I was lucky there was no wait list. Jake still goes to his carer 18 months later, and he asolutely loves her. I wouldn't hestitate to reccomend it. Still it is what you feel comfortable with, and I clicked with my carer straight away, actually I knew her sort of as I used to flat with her baby sister, so I felt fine leaving him, but I was assured that if I had any reservations, I could change no problem. What I love about it is she took him to all the things I was doing with him (music, playgroups etc) where as at a centre they don't really get out? They have a visiting teacher who pops in all the time, as well. I'm happy with it, but its not for everyone. (I also love it is flexible and no horrendous charges if I am late!)

Have to say that is one thing that concerns me - that they drive around with our kids and at a daycare they stay put. I know when i nannied i had some people ask me not to drive with the kids and others had me go to kindys etc. But I do see nannies just out shopping at the mall etc with their charges which I would never have done...that is probably my biggest dilemma with Homecare vs daycare right now...
Im still not decided on what is right for Gabriella yet...altho i know she is benefitting from being at work with me right now i know that wont last beyond sept...ARGH!

Yep I agree Bombshell. This thread got me thinking about that - what does the in home carer get up to and maybe its best to be in daycare where there are lots of people to see what is going on. It's such a tough decision though. For a little while I was thinking of doing the in home care for the first year (when Noah is one) and then putting him in daycare when he is 2 so that he is a little older but i'm not sure about that now either. Arrggghhh - I agree

A good Home care person like myself Trained Karitane/Nanny would only your baby/toddler/child to library visits,
playgroups,
music and movement groups
and Porse playgroups.
My Porse programme manager comes once a month.
I did some relief work in a daycare and wasn't impressed as the babies dont get cuddled much because their are so many.
At least a Nanny can cuddle an upset baby/toddler or child as usually only one or two children

I would have to trust the person I put my child with quite a lot. I would most propably allow them to babysit with me there for a month or two and let them alone for a midday or so after that time. I am the paranoid mom that will have a nanny cam on and most propably a tracker on the kids clothes to see where they were during the day.
In care can give lots of advantages but at the same time if something goes wrong it can go horribly wrong. No one else will be there to keep the person in check all the time.
In creche each child might not get the individual attention they need but at the same time safety wise there is checks. A few people looking after kids at the same time. There is still danger ect.
I think this is one of the reasons I am so thankful I can be a SAHM. I would seriously be in there checking up every few minutes never mind hours.
