I am flying home for four weeks so will need a midwife for a couple of appointments only. When I arrive home I will be nearly 30 weeks so can't remember what tests etc you actually have done at that stage.

Does anyone know if I will be able to get a midwife for just a few appointments or am I better off going to my GP?

not sure, i dont think there are any tests to do at 30wks.
i htink the next tests are 28 wks gestational diabetes test/ & blood work, 35-37wks strep b test.
but it could be goodjust to get your BP and POAS checked while over here, maybe just go to a doc for that depending on how long your over for??

there are no tests at that stage - just checks. so you could possibly see your gp or the hospital.
should you be flying at that stage tho?

I think it would be simpler to just go with your GP but ultimately it's a choice thing. If all is going well, there won't be much to do over that time, just the regular checks and the bloods and strepB - presumably if your LMC where you are now knows you'll be away she'll organise those at appropriate times. If you're on iron tablets or any other meds remember to check things out with the airline.

Your LMC might want to do the birth plan talk before you fly, just in case you go into labour early. Make sure s/he has plenty of notice.

I moved from Picton to Hamilton at about 32 weeks with Kiya... I'd been seeing the hospital midwives in Picton, and was able to arrange for an independant midwife in Hamilton with less hassle than I was expecting! Kiya was born 6 weeks later.

If you are planning on having your baby here (in NZ) it is possible to arrange for a midwife to deliver your baby. If that is not what you were asking, then appointments with your GP will be fine. At that stage, assuming no complications, appointments usually consist of checking blood pressure, POAS to check for protein in urine, baby's heartrate and position.

Thanks for your replies.

I wasn't sure about my GP as when I found out I was pregnant while in NZ she said most GP's don't do any care as the midwives do it all - but I guess she'll be able to take my blood pressure etc.

gandt - My ob/gyn has said I am fine to fly. I have to wear the support tights and make sure I move around alot which will happen anyway as I'm flying over by myself with Zac. I'll be flying back when I'm 34 weeks and my husband will be with us. Cathay Pacific let you fly up to 36 weeks!!!! which I find amazing as you're so close to giving birth then. I had Zac at 38 weeks so fingers crossed I don't have her on the flight back!!
