    Posted: 26 April 2010 at 8:17pm
Hi, I'm 11 weeks pregnant tomorrow and this evening I had a small smear of brown blood when I wiped after going to the toilet. An hour later I had the same thing. It is not a huge amount by any means and has no trace of red, is definitely old brown blood. DH and I had sex this morning so am scared it is as a result of that. I had a bit of cramping after BD but none now.

I guess I am after reassurance from anyone who has had the same thing, a couple of people have said that as long as it is not bright red and not a huge amount that it is okay??

If it's after sex then it could be a sign that your cervix has become more sensitive because of all the hormones - we were told to 'proceed with caution' and try positions which had better control over depth after I had to have an internal and it made me bleed.

Brown = not such a worry.

I would give it a day and if it's still there or you are feeling worried at all, give your midwife a buzz :)

It's not normal but also by no means is it uncommon. There's normally at least one scared person here at any given time asking the same thing.

I bled at 6 weeks then about every 10 days until about 17 weeks. Bright red fresh blood that terrified me every time I saw it even when scan after scan said everything was okay.

BUT I'd go and get some HCG's done or an early scan just in case or you'll be fretting for weeks. I wouldn't necessarily blame the sex, but maybe hold off again until everything is in the clear.

Frankie, I had my brown spotting at about 8 weeks and you'll prob remember it freaked me out too! The first thing my midwife asked was if DH and I had BD'ed, its really common after that.
Brown blood is old blood, red is fresh. Ring your LMC if you need reassurance, get plenty of rest! Let me know how you get on

ETA: I had a big red bleed at 10+ weeks and bubs is still ok

I wouldn't worry too much but if you are RH- and your DH is RH+ you will need to let your MW know as you might need an anti d shot.

I always spot/bleed after sex when i am pregnant.. and yup like an earlier poster the first thing my mw asked was if we had as that was the likely cause.

Give your mw a call and let her know, she may suggest a scan to be ease your mind...

Frankie I had unrelated BD bleeding for a good number of weeks whilst pg with Clodagh and we never did find out the cause. But like yours, it was brown and actually got quite heavy...esp with movement or exercise. It certainly freaked me out!! I ended up having another scan just to make sure bubs was ok- which she was. Perhaps chat to your mw and see if she can organise one for your peace of mind?

I thought you only needed anti d if you've already had a baby, not for number 1

Nope anti d is for any and all bleeding. I've had it 4 times. First time was when I had daniel. One each for my miscarriages.

Its just cause ya can't know what blood type bubs is so they give it when rh- women have bleeding cause ya dont want antibodies forming and creating problems down the track. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I have had a few more smears today but not heavy at all and always brown. I'm off work with a cold so thankfully am able to rest up.

Will contact midwife tomorrow if it still persisting or if it turns red.

Thanks again, its really appreciated.

Frankie I would let her know to be honest... we all to often dont want to bother our mw but that is what they get paid to do!

Both my mw have said to me at first appt any bleeding let me know... Not to trying to freak you out but I just think its worth letting her know so she knows to be keeping and eye on you
