Hi girls,

I'm booked in for an induction this Sunday at Middlemore and I was hoping to get some info on the maternity ward. I can't find much when I google it – unfortunately they don't have a website like Birthcare (where I was planning to have my birth).

Any info or stories would be greatly appreciated but I also have the following questions:

1. Is it easy enough to get a room with a birthing/labour pool?
2. I'm told that the induction could take quite some time work and to pack enough clothing for 3 days. I'll be bored out of my mind if it takes that long. Do they have WIFI?
3. How many support people can I have in with me when I do eventually go into labour?
4. Are they okay with me taking in a whole bunch of stuff like an electric oil burner, birthing ball etc?

Hey

I havent been induced there(was about to be but DS decided to come on his own!)

Anyways, I ended up there at about 42 hours into my labour! The room I was in didnt have a pool, so Im not sure how many rooms have them, but Im pretty sure I would have been able to have my music and anything else I wanted had I started off labour there(when i got there the only thing I wanted to was an epi and my baby the hell out! lol)

I dont think they have WIFI there....but I could be wrong!

When I was going to be induced there, i was told it can take a while, so Id definitly pack enough for a few days. I was told that they would assess me, check my cervix etc and decide if they would pop my waters or use the gel(I would have been 42 weeks exactly).

They were pretty good there, the midwives were nice, I had a really lovely young midwife at the end, I ended up with an emergency C Section and she came into surgery with us etc

Good Luck with everything! Id also give them a call and ask what you can/cant take, just incase.

Hi i was there 9 weeks ago. i was taken in by ambulance and the room i was put in had a pool. when i said something about it as i was wanting a water birth but couldn't as i was being monitored they told me that it is one of the 2 rooms with a pool so i think its first in first served in that regard.

not sure about wifi sorry. do you do crosswords? read? have a portable dvd player or laptop to watch some movies?

i would think you can have as many support people as you want. i had 2 support people but there were 3 chairs for friends/family etc in the room i was in. i would say that as long as they didn't get in the way of the professionals then you could have as many as you want.

i think you can take whatever you want to aid you in the birth.

hope that helps. and good luck

When I went in to have Jae they were still a bit strict with the swine flu cases in the media, so it was only 2 support people (I chose to have DP and my midwife, I had a c-section so she couldnt be there as an acting midwife)

No Wifi as far as I was aware, DP got a pre-paid mobile broadband t-stick for his laptop and that worked easy.

Cant help on induction and how long sorry... that is all different to each person... some people went from nothing to done within hours of induction, while others can take a few days... so I guess prepare for worst case scenario?

And theres only 2 birthing rooms with pools, so get your midwife to ring ahead when you go into labour if you want a better chance at getting one of them, otherwise you'll only get it if one is available when you arrive. You wont go straight there if you go for an induction though, you'll go over the other side to the assessment rooms until they can get labour started.

You cant take anything that involves fire as gas is connected to ALL birthing units, so it is a severe fire hazard (includes things like incense, traditional oil burners etc)... but anything electric is ok, they do have plenty of powerpoints available They are pretty open about what you can take in

have you done a tour of the hospital yet? You could ask your midwife to accompany you, or organise a tour with one of the hospital midwives for you, then that way any questions can be answered directly.

Good luck!!

There were strict with numbers, only because of the bird flu. But in saying that I ended up with 4 people in with me. The rooms are pretty big and spacious so it shouldnt be a prob bringing in what you want.

There are a few rooms with baths, so I guess it depends if that one is available when you are in labour? My midwife always goes for that room, so event though it wasnt ready initially, we moved into it once it was cleaned.

I have no complaints about middlemore - the ward has been upgraded and was really nice. I did get shipped off to Botany waaaay to fast though - epidural hadnt worn off and I couldnt walk so that was not at all fun.

I gave birth at middlemore via c section both times and found it great, the new rooms are good, staff friendly and helpful.
i asked for an ambulance both times when i was transfered to botany, this is a free service.

Good luck, so exciting you are going to meet your boy soon and celebrate his birth- day YAh!

not sure about middlemore but wanted to say re the induction... once they insert the gel (and have finished the moitoring) the best thing to do is to get moving and keep active... mind you if it is late at night they prob would prefer you to just go to sleep.
