Topic: Monitors vs Wireless Networks Posted: 01 May 2010 at 10:58pm |
Hi All,
We have a 2 story house, with bedrooms down and living upstairs. We also have two curious cats so I imagine baby's bedroom door will be shut when sleeping. So I figure a monitor would be a good idea!
I've been busy reading threads about baby monitors here, and I see many recommend the Tommee TIppee or Angelcare monitors with the motion sensors. Cool.
We run our wireless network on 2.4GHz and 5GHz at once, plus we have cordless phones running on 1.9GHz, so I want to make sure all these frequencies won't clash. I haven't had much luck googling so far - I can find that they do have various frequency options, just not what those options are. Can anyone point me in the direction of where I can check on these specs?
Thanks in advance.

i dont know the answer but have you thought about using your cordless phones as a monitor. i brought cordless phones just for that very reason when i had my last child. they were the best monitor i had.
also you may be surprised about the cats. mine never tried to sleep with the babies.

I find we get interference with ours if we place it too close to the wireless modem. Haven't put it by the cordless. The instructions for the Tommy Tippee one mention something about it not going if too near computers etc and we've had this problem.
I'll have to read the instructions again to get what it exactly says if you want.

Ive bought the angelcare 402 version, one reason being cos it has 8 channels, compared to the 2 channels in the 201 version... We havnt used it yet, still waiting for bubs to arrive!

We have DD's room set up so the cats can't get in but I have shut both of them in on occasion without realising (they are good at hiding!). But they since she's been here they have never jumped in her cot or moses basket despite playing in the cot (with the tinfoil and balloons I had in there to deter them) before she arrived.
So we don't have to have the door closed I have used 2 3m hooks, one on the door and one on the frame, that I join together using some chain. To stop the door closing completely we have a bit of fabric hanging over the top. It has worked really well so far except a few weeks ago with my sleep deprived brain I went into her room without unlatching the hook and snapped it off!
ETA we have a wireless network and cordless phone and we have had no problem with interference with our monitor it's just a basic avent one. We have had issues with our neighbours phone interfering though, I know it's theres because it only happens occasionally and never when they have been away.

We have angelcare,, cordless phones, wireless broadband and some thing that lets us watch tv in another room using some wireless thing and haven't have any problems with anything :-)
Also have a cat and he only once ever tried getting into the bassinet and that was when bubs was not born. He sleeps under the spare bed in baby's room but doesn't cause any trouble so just let him.

We have wireless internet, cordless phone, an angel care monitor for movement and a tommy tippee one for sound as the angel care monitor has always had really bad interference (this may be because it is second hand and quite a few years old however) At our old place the cordless had no issues but now at mum and dads it does, not sure why. The tommy tipee one has a little bit of interference but its bearable and we don;t use it at night.;
As for the cats we have two one sleeps on our bed because of the sun, the other on a couple of occasions has slept in the cot and only once has she jumped in with DD but we don;t think it hurt her maybe a slight scratch on the back of her head but she slept through it. Wasn't until DP went in and saw her that we knew. The cat has now taken to sleeping in the box where DD's nappies are though

I should add, with our Tommy Tippee one sometimes none of the 'channels' work and no matter where we place it it won't go but it'll work fine the next day.
We were going to get an angel care one and TBH I wish we had, the only reason we didn't was because for about $150 less we got the TT one and it came with a thermometer and night light.
Also our cats were interested when the baby first came, once they heard her cry the backed off, except one of our cats will, if you don't stop him, jump in the cot with her. However we got a door gate, only 90cm high and this appears to heave stopped them as they haven't worked how to jump over it and can't squeeze through, maybe that's an option? You can get them higher than 90cm.
