Topic: Wine/Beer cravings Posted: 16 May 2010 at 10:41am |
I had friends over last night for dinner and they were drinking wine and beer. And for some reason, i could smell it and just miss not having a drink.
Is there any low alcohol drink that anyone has tried

You can get alcohol removed wine...I think it is called edenvale. It's apparently quite nice.
Also macs light beer is pretty good, and has only 1% alcohol

There is a light beer at the supermarket, it's in a white can, very passable as a normal beer.

Ha. I craved beer all though my last pregnancy. I had the occasional sip. Then when DS was a few weeks old I had a glass and wondered what was I thinking lol.

Someone told me about non-alcoholic Clausthaler beer when I was pregnant and I had it as a beer shandy at new years. It's classed as a non-alcoholic beer, the alcohol is taken out of it when it's been brewed and it's got less than .5% or something like that. I got it from Countdown for around $9 for a pack of four.
ETA it looks like I've written 'less than 5% alcohol but it's less than POINT FIVE % - just in case anyone thinks I'm a bit nuts

Ginger beer? Poor substitute I know but I found it also helped with any nausea I had.

That works too Jazzy!! I was craving champagne when I was pregnant so one night DH told me to sit down, and he brought me some sparkling grape juice and served it in a champagne glass.. it was fantastic, alongside my plate of pickles and a lemonade ice block

I second the grape juice!
My mother cant drink and has the non alchoholic wine. It tastes like real sparkling, chardonnay etc. Cant say I'm to find of it....but then I'm not a huge fan of real wine either

Argh, sorry I tried the non alcoholic wine and I thought it was awful I just have a small sip of the real stuff when I really crave it.
Beer though, I used to get the non alcoholic beer - imported from Germany I think - and it tasted just like the real deal. Or Mac's light - I think it has 1% alcohol.

The winery my husband works for has just started making juice which is absolutely gorgeous, it's the same juice they use to make their super popular muscat . If you can find any I'd totally recommend it - I love it! It's kinda expensive, but is a pretty good wine substitute!

Ohh I remember it well. Tui blonde came out while I was pg and I had SUCH cravings for it... I had to settle for sniffing the bottle when DP opened one for himself.
It doesn't sound like it would work but sniff a (freshly opened and full) bottle for a few minutes and you might find the craving is satisfied for a while.
Worth a shot if non-alcoholic beer is as bad as it sounds!

Haha, I thought I was a freak for sneaking sniffs of DH's beer. I definitely got a few weird looks at quiz night last week. I LOVE the smell of it at the moment, and its SOO hard not to have a taste. I'm sure one sneaky sip wouldn't harm, but I don't think I'd be able to stop lol. I'm not usually a beer drinker though, which is weird - I'm more of a wino.

I had a very weak shandy (as in a tablespoon of beer) when I was craving it bad!
I went out to a really fancy dinner where everyone at the table was drinking gorgeous and expensive wine....I hated it (we are quite "into" wine...so was torture!) I ended up having a white wine spritzer and sitting on it all night...I think DH finished it in the end anyway...

When I was pregnant with Joshua I used to crave the smell of my ex's bourbon. I'd always offer to pour his drinks and then stand there with the lid off the bottle sniffing like a street kid Was weird though as I can't stand bourbon and I didn't want to drink it, I just wanted to smell it LOL.
