9.5 month old DS has just started waking at 6am ish. For the while before that he's been sleeping through until 7/7.30am.

It's coincided with the start of crawling and increased day sleeps. Yesterday he had 5 hours of day sleeps (3 in the morning/2 in the arvo). Prior to the early waking he was having about 3 hours.

Should I bite the bullet, keep him up longer/wake him after 1.5 hours and really limit the day sleeps in the hope it will extend the night one?

Or do I just go with it? To complicate matters, we start daycare 3 days a week from tomorrow.

If I were you I would wait and just let him adjust. I found that every big milestone my son hit he would go out of routine a little for a while then he'd be sort himself out within a few months.
Could you just leave him in his cot till seven so he gets the idea its not time to wake. I know that he'll probably be noisey but hopefully he'd get the idea pretty quick.
I have always let my son sleep as much as he likes in the day and then kept to a strict bedtime and wake up time for the day. He learns to adjust his sleep around that.

I would also just wait. With every new developmental milestone Ella went through she woke early as well (they just want to practice their new skill). After a while (maybe a couple of weeks????) she went back to normal.

She was also a big day sleeper (i.e. now at nearly 3 she sleeps for 3 hrs during the day) and I have always let her sleep as long as she wants during the day (and she still sleeps well at night and was always in bed by 7).

Contrary to everything I'd heard. DS's sleeps improved once he started daycare (baring the first week) - go figure.

Otherwise I agree with the above. I try and stick to bed/awake times, and he can sleep as much (or as little) as he wants during the day. DS is not a model sleeper and we do have 'issues' some days.

I am going to be a bit different here. At that age I was told by Plunket that the 2 sleeps she was having in the day should be no more than 2 hours in the morning (that being her naturally longer sleep) and no more than 1 hour in the afternoon.

I agree that it could be the developmental milestone but after a week or 2 - if he hasn't settled back into a good sleeping pattern then I would wake him after these times for the day sleeps.

Might be worth talking it over with your plunket or karitane nurse.

Good luck and all the best
