I'm OVER it! Ds2 is 6 months tomorrow and is waking anywhere from 3 -5 times per night to feed.
I breastfeed. He can sleep from 7pm till 5am and i feed him then. BUT that was only on night, he has been too much waking up!

So here's his night routine same everynight:
6 .15pm Bath
6.30pm last night feed lasts half an hour , has both sides plus a top up of between 100- 200mls of formula what ever he takes.
7pm in bed usually asleep soon after. Self settles or though sometimes has dummy. That i take out onces he's asleep.
10.30pm or 11pm wakes to feed, feeds for half an hour.
2pm wakes to feed, change nappy
4pm or 4.30pm wakes to feed
sometimes wakes at 5.30 or 6am to feed.
up about 7.30 for the day.

his night wake ups do vary slightly.

What i have tried:

dreamfeed at 10.00 or 10.30 Dh does this bottle of formula. Worked for a short while but then he started waking at 1am to feed and every 2 hours after that. So stopped this.

I don't use the dummy to settle in the middle of the night and if i don't feed him he screams and screams! Have left him to scream but has a three year old who wakes up, plus he still needs 1 night feed a this age but WHEN????

Dh going in to settle him, Ds2 screams even more.

feeding him twice only, at 10.30pm and 4am but he still wakes as he doesn't know when i will feed him, of course!

HElP don't know what to do.
He doesn't need to feed 3-5 times a night!
Any suggestions???????????/

yummymummy2, that must be so hard for you. sorry i don't have any advice but didn't want to read and run.

All i can say is I don't think he necessarily NEEDS to have 1 night feed at his age. DS is 3 months and doesn't feed in the night, his last feed is usually around 6.30 and he doesn't get fed again until between 5 and 7 the next morning.

Is he a big bub or little bub??

We still had 2 hourly waking right up til 1 year. I knew he shouldn't...he could have other issues going on? Turns out for us it was silent reflux.

Is he on solids during the day?

What happens if you don't wake him for his dream feed?

Can you remember what you did differently that day that he slept through?

I agree with BIzzy

Six months is still little. DD fed anywhere from 1-5 times a night till 14 mnths or so.
I woulld just go with it and nap during the day if you can.

can you try feeding him more during the day? sounds like a lot of feeding at night, i guess all babies are different but you need your sleep too!

big hugs. we just got dd to sleep through. not sure what did it in the end, hubby just started going in, made sure nappy was clean, and gave her some water incase she was thirsty and a cuddle. I also made sure she fed loads during the day, bf. also we started solids which seems to have helped too. sorry not much help!

My little one is 7 months next week and we are still doing night feeds at least twice I think it is quite normal. Only thing I can suggest is shortening the feeds which is something I do with Esme when she has woken frequently (she is BF)

Hi all thanks for your advice

AandCsmum- he is a big boy around 9 plus kgs,
he is on solids started at 5.5 months, has some after lunchtime BF.

I Bf every 2 hours during the day, or on demand. He constantly feeds. Which is o.k and what he's suppose to do during the day!

if we don't dreamfeed him he still wakes up and 2 hours later.

Bizzy- I know that at 6 months he still needs night feeding and am happy to do 2 feeds max. But not 5 feeds! I did feed my DS1 every 2 - 3 hours right up until 9 months when we cut all night feeds, as i was returning to work full time and needed sleep!.Plus only had him.... things change when there is another child to think of!

This time however have a three year old, who i need to be awake for during the day so can't nap when DS2 does.

I think it's comfort, more than hunger. But how do you stop feeding??? It's also the lenght of the feeding 30 -40 mins longer if i allow!!!!!

Also to add he won't sleep longer than 4 hours ! (at night)

He used to do 6 -8 hours in one go but that all changed at 3.5 months!

i miss sleep

i would suggest you make sure he isnt too cold/warm as well. i know that sometimes with eden a quick cuddle was all that was needed - not all the time unfortunately. Or he might just need a bum change. one of my kids - cant remember which at the mo tho - used to hate being wet so would get cranky till changed, even if the middle of the night. also does he sleep in your room? maybe you are too noisy for him?

The same thing happened with us from about 3 months till 4 1/2 months he decided he needed to feed more often for some reason, but for us thankfully it stopped and now we're down to 1 feed. So hopefully it's a longer version of that and will stop soon. But what happens if you do let him use the dummy at night? If it's comfort he wants maybe that would help or introducing one of those cuddly blankie things?

Getting up loads during the night for 6 months is hard work on the body.

One of the girls in our antenatal class did the same thing with shortening feeds like esmesmum. Maybe chop it to 25 mins per feed for a few nights then drop to 20, 15 etc.. and see what happens?

Also, do you wait a little while before going to him? Sometimes I find by the time I go to the kitchen and heat up a bottle etc and get to his room (which isn't really that long) he's actually fallen back to sleep!

Gosh, no advice, but *hugs*.
Sounds like you've got a hungry boy who likes to BF. I'm sure some will tell you to get tough and spread out those feeds - though I never could follow any advice which ended up with an unhappy DS.
Could DH do a night feed with formula/EBM?

Aww, hope he settles down soon for you I do know how tiring it is though - my DD stopped BFing at 13months (2months ago) but STILL wakes in the night! Only now I can't feed her so try all the other methods to get her to sleep but we're often up for 1-3hrs in a row, then up for the day at 4:30am

I'm sure my answer doesn't help you in the slightest, sorry, just wanted to say I know how you feel...

Aw I really have no advice but know how you feel. DD slept through the night for a month then we hit 5 months and it went out the window. For a month she was waking up 4-5 times a night and wouldn't go back to sleep unless fed. She was teething and a growth spurt. Even now we still have 2 night feeds usally so sorry no advice as we haven't got there yet but sometimes i feel it the stink thing about a BF baby (most of my friends FF and their babies sleep through

Hugs, I know night waking is hard. My nights are a blur. I don't get up at the moment as I'm just too tired, DH brings C into me so I have no idea of the time!

So he's on one solids a day? Maybe introduce another solids meal & see if that helps?

Other than that, I guess get a really good coffee to wake you up in the morning.

I know exactly how you feel, my 15 month old has never really slept through the night (maybe 5 times max?) and is now waking 3-4 times a night and needing a BF to go back to sleep.
With my son I KNOW its just for comfort - I've just started reading Elizabeth Pantley's No-Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers to plan for cutting out night feeds. I'd recommend reading her first book for babies - that might help.

Otherwise, I'd also suggest adding another solids meal, in case he is actually still really hungry.

Thanks guys

Last night he was up 7 times!! between 7pm and 6am. DH was excellent, i managed to only feed 4 times and did reduce the amount to around 30 mins each time. But the 1am wake up was longer as i fell aslepp in the chair feeding up and woke at 2.10am! so he had a big feed!

i think he's teething. Have given teethmed spray today so hopefully that helps, also have added another meal so he now has lunch and dinner so that may help too.

thanks for all the support it's good to know others are going through it too
