Topic: Being hacked? Posted: 28 May 2010 at 8:25pm |
Has anyone been hacked before?
Hubby had one of his accounts (for his game) hacked, they stripped everything (this account costs money to play) so Im very pissed! Ive just spent the last 30 minutes changing passwords for everything, because he used my email address for this account! we changed it, then whoever it was, changed it AGAIN! this went on 3 flippen times. we have no idea who it was or how they managed to keep changing it
but now I'm freaking out as to what else they can get into!
anyone got any advice on how to stop this (apart from getting off the net :/ )
I told hubby at 7.36pm when I received the email saying the password was originally changed, it took him 10 minutes to get the password reset then yeah another few times for him to have access to that account! everything in that game my husband has spent hours on - literally HOURS/days/weeks/months years even (he started playing this game like 2003 - maybe even before that) on GONE!!! in 20 minutes [:'(]

Awww that really sucks, its so hard to get to high lvl on WoW.
However WoW accounts get hacked a lot because they are so valuable and people will pay to buy an account with high lvl characters with good gear. And those who hack can make gold with em and sell that too....
Ah this is making me have withdrawal symptoms.

I've lost an account that way... I now have another account (was my first account and a whole years worth of work gone down the drain!!) and suddenly keep getting all these spam emails saying my account is going to get closed cos I'm 'selling' it or some rubbish... I dont click on ANY link within an email... if I need to access my account, I go straight to the WoW website...
I'm having withdrawals too... we havent had the money since Feb for me to play

Have you got an up to date antivirus and spyware/malware program running?
The most usual way people gain access to accounts such as this is through email. Either by pretending to be from WoW, or by getting into your email itself.
It would be a good idea to change your email passwords as a precaution.
Good luck to your hubby, hope he levels up again soon!

DP used to play wow. And he spent A LONG time playing so I understand how guttering it must be!
Make sure you have different passwords for everything that aren't easily guessed. Make sure you have, like kellie said, up to date spyware/antivirus etc software. If possible copy and paste passwords from somewhere else as this blocks them from seeing key strokes. Also takes hakers longer to figure out where you copy and pasted from too.
I would also be worried about internet banking passwords etc too...
Hope you get it sorted soon though!!
I don't know about WOW but I know on other games like Runescape they have bots that are against the rules that people use to level quicker but people can also use them to hack into others accounts.
But also like kellie said, people can gain them by posing as WOW people or other places iygwim.

when you reset passwords use the onscreen keyboard (in accessories)
it will stop hackers who may have set up a key stroke copier on your computer.
change all passwords this way

Some people have careers out of it, like if other players get pissed then they pay them to hack accounts, sorta like a job. It's so ridiculous!! (DP has a guy in his IT course who hacks for a living)

Yeah, quest items wouldnt have been able to be sold, but if his chars had enchanting, they could disenchant any gear unable to be sold, and then sell the components from said DEing... I had only been playing for a year, but I'd finally levelled my main up enough to get a mount (back before they changed it to level 20 from 40!) and my hunter could finally wear the mail I'd gotten while tagging along in an instance way over my level (have some friends with level 80's that were very obliging )
Friend of mine has been playing for about that long too, I imagine he would be more than gutted of his account was ever hacked!! He's the one who introduced it to me years ago, but I couldnt play myself until we got the desktop 2 years ago!

and it doesn't end
Ive received emails from other providers asking me for my details etc now. all sent to my email (cause it was my email account used on hubbys game) sender is different (windows live, trademe, anz) but the acutal email they were sent from is the same!
I knew as soon as it asked for my name, password, dob and country that it was a crock of sh*t
my antivirus has also picked up a few things today. its been going nuts!
sigh

Lizzle - I rang hubby before and he said leave them in my deleted folder for now and he will try to sort a few things out tonight. I may tell him to just ring the cops though.it comes from a hotmail account so if I mark it as spam will all hotmail addresses become spam?

nope, only the email address it came from, I've been marking all those emails as spam, and it just filters them through to my spam inbox instead

I'm a WOW Widow, so I know your DH's pain.
My Hubby would CRY if that happened to him.
I know this can't help with your current situation, but if he gets any of his game stuff recovered/sorted (cos 3 x level 80 characters are valuable!! Especially when paying $45USD a month to keep them running!!), WOW has a security key application you can download to your phone.
DH uses it. Whenever he logs in he puts in hus username and password, then it promps him for the security key which is a randomly generated 9 digit (I think 9) that gets sent to his phone that he has to put in. (that gets changed every time he logs in)
Just a bit of extra security
Also, check with your banks and so on to see if they offer that kind of thing, too.
I hope that made sense.
