    Posted: 06 June 2010 at 8:42pm
Hi all. I am 6 weeks pregnant with our first . Very excited and of course a bit scared. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good midwife in Palmerston north... Or how to choose a good one.. Also when should I first see one? I asked my dr these questions but unfortunately didn't get great answers.

I'm not in Palmerston North, but I can just say, try and get one ASAP. There is a big midwife shortage, and you want to get in as quick as possible. It took me longer than I thought it would to get hold of a midwife (many didn't return my calls). Just bear that in mind!

This site has some good information and things you can ask.

I didn't get a mw until I was about 9ish weeks, that was when I found out though. And my mw, brilliant as she was (as I knew nothing about mw's) was actually my 10th choice.

Can't help on one in Palmy, but good luck, just make sure you get on well!!

Congratulations!

I would definitely get onto finding one as soon as possible.   They usually start seeing you at around 8-10 weeks I think.    You see them monthly until 28 weeks, then fortnightly until 36 weeks and then weekly until your baby is born. And then they visit you at home for 6 weeks after the baby is born.

Me personally, I would find a midwife that makes you feel comfortable and is flexible in regards to your ideals/culture/preferences.    Some midwifes can be quite forthright in regards to pain relief and procedures.    Some midwives will only do births at a hospital or a birthing centre, so if you're wanting a home birth, you would need to find one that will do that.

If you can get blondie warrington she apparently is fantastic.. she has been doing it for ages and delivered me and my brother. Cause of when you will be due a lot of midwifes are away, it took me 5 to find one that was available. I am with fiona mccrae and she seems good. I had an appointment with her at 5.5 weeks and then I have one at 9.5 weeks, so next week. I cant remember how often it is, but is a month for a while, then it goes to fornightly and weekly closer to the date.

I can totally recommend Megan Halloway from Heretaunga Midwifery, she was truly fantastic!!!

A few girls in my coffee group used Fiona and have had good things to say about her.

Blondy does have a good rep, I was initially told to try her, but she wasn't taking on any new clients when I rang (a year ago mind you).

Good luck, I wouldn't definately get onto it ASAP.

I made appointments with a couple of the mid wife clinics and went to see them - in the end I went with Megan Holloway she's lovely and the staff at Heretaunga Midwives are all really lovely.
