Topic: C-Section & Breech Qus Posted: 30 June 2010 at 12:25pm |
I know I know I know there is plenty of time for the baby to turn yet, but with his position the sonographer & mw think it's quite unlikely.
When do they make that final call as to whether it's a C-ser or not? If the baby doesn't move by himself, do they have to try to or can we essentially go for an elective at that point? I'm terrified of the idea of surgery, but would rather know which way it's going to go either way, so I can prepare for that. Anyway breech/c-section stories appreciated! I'm in Canterbury if it differs between DHB's
TIA

I had an elective c-section for breech presentation in Hamilton just over three years ago.
It was only picked up at 37 weeks though, as I think he must have turned sometime around then. I think it was too late to try and turn him because I wasn't offered to try turning him. I went and had a specialist appointment the week after that and the c-section was arranged for 39.5 weeks. Once I knew I was having surgery, I just mentally prepared myself for it. Knowing the date and time really helped me as well as the brilliant surgery team who talked me through the whole thing. I knew exactly what was happening, what was going to happen, what to expect in regards to pain and how it was going to be managed. I really loved my elective c-section. The second time around trying for a VBAC and ending up with a c-section anyway was much much more traumatic.
Is he a footling breech or a bum first breech? Footling/kneeling is pretty much straight to c-section but bum first can be birthed naturally.

If possible the will offer a ECV but byou dont have to do it... as mamanee said if its bottom prsentation then you can opt to birth naturally, yte ECV or have an elective... if its footling its normally straight to elective...

Footling I guess, he's pretty much upright lol
Thats it, I just want to know so I can prepare. It's rather painful compared to DD who engaged early and presented for an easy birth (can't remember the technical term!).

Flake, I could've written the same thing
This baby has been transverse breech for a few weeks now. I'm supposed to see my MW tomorrow so she's have a feel and see where he's at. I don't feel as if he's moved at all, so she said she'll send me for a scan to check position and we'll go from there.
I'll be offered an ECV (there's a thread on it HERE.
I'm in the dark as to when a C-section will be scheduled for me, so I'll be interested in the replies on this thread, too.
Hopefully your wee one turns for you (like you said, plenty of time - but mine hasn't obliged in the same time frame you've got ).
Fingers crossed for you

Mine was booked in when I was 36 weeks ( didn't find out he was breach until my waters broke at 35 weeks), but I had other complications and they wouldn't do an ECV because of that. I had him at 38 weeks but I believe under normal circumstances they wait until closer to 40, but try to avoid you going into labour because of the risk of cord prolapse. Bum engaged babies are sitting straight up to and if yours is that way with being a second baby they might let you labour naturally if you wish.
They checked the morning of my c/s that he was still breach so they give you right up to the last minute to not have a c/s if there is any chance baby could have turned. Mine was well and truly stuck but they still checked anyway to be sure as they knew I would prefer natural if possible. ( I was at chch womens)

I am based in Canterbury. My son was breech, he never turned. About 36 weeks my MW referred me to an obstetrican at CWH. The offered to try ECV, which I declined, as with first pregnancys it is not successful, it is very painful and there is a risk to the baby. Some babies are breech for reasons such as the cord is too short for them to turn.
I had a few days to decide what I wanted to do, and I chose to have a c-section as I felt it was the safest option. They gave me the exact date about 2 weeks before (and that was after a LOT of phone calls chasing them up)
It is totally up to you, not the hospital/midwife or anyone else what you do. If your baby is thought to be not too big (I think under 8lbs) you can even opt for a vaginal birth, although there are risks associated with that too.
I really didn't want a c-section, but felt it was the best option. But it went really smoothly and I had a really quick and pretty painless recovery.

Hey, They found out my baby was breech yesterday. I was just 38 weeks by scan dates. They tried turnig the baby manually. It was very very very very very very uncomfortable and painful. And it didn't work. Today my tum is black and blue.
My baby is bum first. But since it's my first pregnancy i don't get to try natural dilivery. Apparently there is too many risk because first time labours are a trail runs anyway; they don't know if my body can handle it. If i'd had previous successful natural births they would let my 'try' to birth a bum first breech baby.
But it's not to be. I am booked in for a C Section next wednesday (39 +1 weeks). It's been a major shock. But as one of the other ladies said it's nice to know a date, We have a week to get organised for bubba and to prepare ourselves mentally for a C SEction and the recovery from C Sections. It's much better than being rushed into a C Section once you are in labour.

Flake, thought I'd update you..
Had a MW appointment this morning and baby has gone from transverse to head-down, 4/5th engaged
So after my bummer of a post, there's some good news, and some hope, for your wee one to turn

my baby was breech for ages. i was going to be allowed to deliver breech but not all OB's or MW's do it. i wasnt allowed to deliver footling though cos the chances of a prolapsed cord are about 25% which is really bad. other than that it should be fine. they probably check for low fluid levels and stuff but as long as they are fine and he will come out bum first you can demand a vaginal birth.

See he's all set to come out foot first at the moment, and if I'm going to birth naturally I want it to be at a birthing centre, not in town, and if he managed to turn bum first I imagine I'll be sent into town.
Argh, I just wish I knew! Thank you everyone so much for your replies, I think I've accepted that either he'll turn enough and I'll follow birth plan A, or I'm gonna get super uncomfy, and I'm just going to have to harden up, and deal with a c-section. I think I'll bypass any offer to try and 'manually move him', and just opt for the c-section, when they offer it.
