I have just read that parsley is not good to eat during pregnancy, did you know this?
Is there anything else that would conisdered common that you shoudnt eat obv we know of the basics like deli food etc

I knew we shouldn't eat raw parsley....I have been eating it cooked though.
Can't remember why we shouldn't eat it though!

Apparently it has some chemical that has been associated with miscarriages. Someone mentioned it to me early on in my pregnancy when I was raving about the awesome dinners I had been making with parsley pesto....

Hummus is something that I think is quite odd to not be able to eat - I think it it is in relation to the tahini. At least I hope so as I eat a tonne of chickpeas, lemon juice and garlic anyway!

Hummus is only on the don't eat list because about 10 years ago a bad batch of tahini was used which was contaminated with listeria. I think it's ok to eat if it's freshly opened (ie, within 24 hours) but avoid it if you're worried!

Is it a chemical on the parsley, like a pesticide or something? Or in it that is removed when its cooked? I'd totally never heard of this before!

Be careful of special kind of mushrooms and also alfalfa sproutes and beansprout etc.

holey moley. the list of what you can eat gets smaller every day! It peeves me a bit that they don't say WHY you can't eat them. For example I heard that soft cheeses are actually fine because they're all from pasturised milk now days. And sprouts and things - what the hell is wrong with them?

I agree, thesaff! I don't mind not eating things, but I really like to know why. My understanding on soft cheeses is that since they are pasturised, it's OK to eat small amounts when they're just opened. But by nature of being soft cheese, they're prone to picking up bugs, so eating them cold after they've been opened and stored isn't a good idea. I'm pretty sure that's the theory behind NZFSA's advice.

The pasteurised / unpasteurised milk gets me a bit - they say don't drink it under any circumstances. But as far as I know all pasteurisation is is super-heating milk to kill bugs, so surely it should be OK cooked? It's in situations like that that I'd like information on why they make reccommendations, rather than just being told 'don't eat'. But, that said, I'm more than happy to play it safe, it's only nine months.

ETA that sprouts are prone to carrying listeria... who'd have though, huh?

I think one of the other reasons for avoiding soft cheeses, like brie and camembert is that they are usually eaten at room temperature which has the risk of developing listeria.
Its ok cooked, ie: on pizza - that's how I've been eating it.

The humus thing was to do with the tahini having listeria. I make fresh humus and toast my own sesame seeds in place of the tahini and its fine.

Yay another reason to not eat sprouts, can't stand them anyways.

Interesting about parsley, I guess used as a garnish or dried and added to cooking isn't going to be a sufficient quantity to cause any harm. Parsley pesto is probably over kill though.

It is difficult eating a balanced flavoursome diet during pregnany, I crave just about everything I'm not allowed, and that I wouldn't normally eat anyways.

Interesting... i read also you shouldnt have too much vit C... so like one small glass of orange juice a day.. its hard because they seem to put vit C in lots of things.... vit pills, iron pills etc etc...

The list is soooo long... and throughout this pregnancy I have found it annoying that I only find this stuff out from self research.... surely if they were all "donts" the doc would just give us a massive list?!

With one week til my due date and a max i guess of another 3 weeks of being preggers I am soo looking forward to a ham sandwich !
