 Topic: Vaporisers, advise please

Hi
I was hoping i could get some advise on the difference between a waterless vaporiser and a water one. We currently have a water one that is no longer working very well so are looking at replacing it. I have come across a waterless plug in one with a night light and was hoping someone out there has used one and can tell if its as affective as the water ones or is a gimmick??

ive rung plunket line and they put me through to help line and the best ive got is there is no scientific evidence that vaporisers help.......!???
This may prove to be as difficult as car seat researching........!!!

I invested in a Vick's vaporizer for DS as I'd been recommended by friends with kids.
Didn't know how beneficial it was until I slept in DS' room with it on when I had a cold. Kept my nose clear and not dry and achey and my throat moist - so less coughing.
Just the vicks liquid would be good for a stuffy nose but the water vapour provides relief to dry passages. I read somewhere that viruses/bacteria multiply in dry passages without mucus to wash them away.
There is a lot of moisture in the air of course, so need to be careful and air room out next day.

Thanks, i also heard that you can have bowl of water in the room also to keep moisture in the air.
We used our steam one for 6years now but its given up the ghost, we used it for all of us and I feel it helped breathing.

Interesting question - I can't work out how a vapourless one would work.
We too have a Vicks vaporiser, bought it when DS1 got bad croup. I think it made a huge difference to him and I just wish we had bought it earlier. It is expensive though which is why I put off buying one for ages. I also didn't find that the room was particularly damp the next day but we did have his door ajar.
the other great thing about the water ones is they can be used from birth, as it is just water.

And can add other essential oils like lavender to help sleep also
I know what you mean about a vaporless one also......and if they are that great why arent there more in NZ, and wouldnt the glad plug ins have a eculyptus plug in etc..........all those things come to mind but no answer for them yet

We use our crock pot with the lid off and some vicks or karvol in it. I have used a vicks vapouriser before but could not afford to buy one then heard about the crock pot idea and have used that ever since and it does the the same thing without the noise.

Oh bumma, I just bought one off TM tonight, altho I only paid $25 so not as bad as a brand new one
Great idea though so thanks, Im sure theres loads of other people that will benefit from that idea and i will pass this one around for sure

i had a waterless vaporiser and it really didnt do the trick. it gave up the ghost about 4 times after i used it. it just blows the oils into the air and i threw it out because there isnt anyone in NZ that can fix them here. not worth it!!!
i use the Euky bear which is about 15 years old (hand me down) and I love it. helps with te coughing at night and think that this is much better than the waterless one.
