It is a while since i lived in a house with gas hot water but i can tell you that the gas plus power bill for other stuff was still less than just power alone (we changed from all power to power and gas while we lived there so could compare before and after.
I love gas hot water so much!
Sorry i am not of more help!

Bubie- the big bottles are about $120ish, and I think you can get about 3-4 weeks out of one if your using it for JUST hot water (not heating as well)

Ok thank you MooCow and KazS, Just that me and DP are looking at buying our first home, and will be on abit of a tight budget with a new baby and also doing up the house bit by bit, so was just wondering weather or not it would be cheaper to have Gas as this house only has that or to get Electric...

Hi Bubie
We use the big gas bottles (not mains gas) just to heat our hot water. They cost us about $100 each and there's an annual hire fee for the bottles of about $200. In the summer one gas bottle can last us 6 - 8 weeks, and in the winter 4 - 6 weeks. (but we're in Auckland so it's a bit warmer!) We've found it heaps cheaper.

Our hot water is gas and I love it. The cost is $35 a month to have the line and $20 a month just for the gas. The price of the gas line will varie with different companies our has gone down a lot to about $20 a month with a different company.

We have bottles. It has just gone up to $108.33 per bottle (from $106) and there is an annual fee of about $50 I think. I like that we don't have to pay a line rental!! We go through a bottle about every 8 weeks in summer, and 6ish weeks in winter - we only run our hot water on gas, everything else is electric. I do love that we never run out of hot water though! Oh and there are 2 kids and 2 adults in the house, so about 8-9 showers a week, plus around 4 deep baths, plus all the washing is done in a warm or hot wash.

Find out if the house has control pads to turn up and down the temperature. If they do your gas can last longer as you control the temp but if it doesn't you can use more gas coz it heats the water to a higher temp and you just add cold water to it. Ring around the gas companies where you are and ask about rental and bottle prices.

Bubie- the $120ish is for the big bottles one of your local companies do (eastern gas and hire? I think it is). I'm not sure what/if there is a yearly rental though, I could ask Mum, they have a gas fire.
I don't think down here you can do the line and gas, I think it's only bottles (I only say that cos I know of HEAPS of people who do gas heating/water and don't know of a single person on a line-it's all bottles down here)

That's right, there's no reticulated gas in the South Island, only bottled gas :)

Check with Gas companies as Bottle gas is way more expensive down south.
