Topic: Hypnobirth Posted: 15 August 2010 at 8:41pm |
Has anybody had any experience with hypnobirthing or knows of anybody who has used this technique during labour?
I found this on a website and thought is sounded quite interessting:
Unlike other childbirth methods that teach you how to cope with and manage pain, HypnoBirthing is based on the premise that childbirth does not necessarily need to be painful if the mother is properly prepared and relaxed. When women understand that pain is caused by constrictor hormones, created by fear, they learn, instead, to release fear thus creating endorphins—the feel good hormones. They are then able to change their expectations of long, painful labor and are able to replace them with expectations of a more comfortable birthing. Rather than exhausting, shallow breathing and the distraction techniques of typical “prepared childbirth” programs, HypnoBirthing parents learn deep abdominal breathing and total relaxation, enabling the laboring mother to work in harmony with her body and her baby. This allows her to achieve a shorter and more comfortable labor for herself and baby.

I've been reading the book and I'm practicing the breathing...haven't done too much of the relaxation practice which I really should.
Classes aren't available where I am so I'm having to do it self-directed.
My partner isn't too keen on it...think he's a bit of a sceptic and that it's all a bit airy-fairy for him...
Having never had a baby before I don't really know what to expect but I'm keen to try anything and to go into it all with an open mind...

I read the book - loved the ideas and changed my whole focus to realise birth is a natural thing etc. I practised the breathing but couldnt attend classes due to location. I used the positive affirmations- and also found more online. I used the lists for birth plan too, and did things like - only had 1 scan all pregnancy, asked midwife not to tell me what size she suspected baby was, no internals, I didnt time contractions etc.
I had the best most amazing natural birth.
My first birth was truly horrible- so bad that I got PTSD after it, so even more amazing that I overcame al that to have a completely diff experience 2nd time.

It sure sounds interessting so I'm gonna hunt down the book and do some reading. Don't think I'll be attending the courses though.
Mealz79 - we are the exact opposite, I'm the seceptic and DH is into this kind of stuff much more than me.
One of the reasons I am looking into it is that I think it will give him a task during the birth and I know he'll be pretty good at helpning me to relax etc.
Kellz, its amazing that it worked so well for you and gave you such a different experience second time around!

I never took a course, but a lot of the 'tricks' and things I used to prepare and get me through labour are similar to typical hypnobirthing stuff. You could see if your MW has any books on it she could loan you, or even check your local library?

I'm keen to try getting ahold of the book for this time around. I read Juju Sundin's book for my last labour and I think that helped alot....didn't do it fully natural though as I was induced and ended up having an epi as I hadn't slept for 3 days and was exhausted!!

It's called Birth Skills - it's such a positive read! It's kind off similar in the fact that it describes labour as a natural process and it goes into some detail behind why/how our body labours which makes sense to me. It gives techniques and exercises to do which includes visualisation, vocalisation, movement, and a few others but I can't remember them all.

Ive been reading the Mongan Method hypno birthing book, and I clicked as to why, even though I was being induced it didnt hurt , as I believed even though my baby was big it was what we weremade to do.... it was only once I knew I still wasnt dialating after 7 hours of the drip that it started to hurt, and I recon it was in my head.
So next time Im going to give it a crack, and go to the classes (I know there are some in Wellington)

The reason I didnt do them was that tehy are $400! After just spending 200$ on the parents centre ANC I just couldnt justify it!!
But the website is http://www.hypnobirthingwellington.co.nz/classes.htm
I am doing it next time!

I went to hypnobirthing classes for my first pregnancy. Unfortunately only made it to two classes before DS arrived at 32 weeks but I found them really worthwhile. As Kellz mentioned, the big thing is changing your focus and seeing birth as a natural thing that you are totally capable of, rather than being afraid. HB helped me put a hugely positive spin on everything to do with birthing and the baby and I truly think this helped with my premature birth I'm not going to do the classes again this time round but have been rereading the book (by Marie Mongan) and need to find my CDs and start listening/relaxing!

Oh and re the OP, I found the book really useful both times, but only went to one class and felt a bit silly (could have just been the particular practitioner, but it was a bit airy fairy for me) and I wanted to be mobile during my labour and for hypnobirthing you're supposed to be fairly prone or you can't achieve the right sort of relaxation. In hindsight CalmBirth would have been way better - like Mel said, a bit less hippy
Search on YouTube for hypnobirth, there are a few videos on there about it / birth videos. Some libraries have the Mongan book too. A lot of the basic information is available online (google Fear Tension Pain Syndrome)
