Topic: Nuk latex teats Posted: 30 August 2010 at 1:21pm |
I'm wanting to get my 9 month old to take a bottle and have read that the Nuk latex teats are good for babies not taking to it easily. Now i'm confused as to which size teat to get!
Any advice as to which size to get? the 0-6 month ones look like a better size to introduce her to as the 6 month+ one looks quite big? but the flow might be too slow? or the 0-6 month with the criss cut at the hole be better? i think they call it the cereal teat.

My son was on them from about 6wks. I kept him on the small until he was around 9mths then moved him up to the bigger size.
I would go for the smaller size first of all, and just see how she goes with the intake.

My DD uses the 6+ month med flow and copes with it well. Apparently the cross cut is good as they control the flow of milk better. I use mine with EBM so I don't know they would work with formula.
I went straight to the 6+ month ones at 5.5 months with no issues (apart from she didn't want to take a bottle)

What are you wanting to put in the bottle Kirstine? I just had the same issue (having to go back to work, so trying to get my DS on a bottle), and the salesperson said that if you are using it for breast milk or water, go for the slow ones (0-6 months), as they are quite thin and watery. If you are using it for formula, go for the faster ones (6 months plus).

i am wanting to try EBM first so the 0-6 mth ones will probably be best in that case. Then if she does take the bottle I will then introduce formula and would have to then buy another teat for that.
just hope it works!

I got my advice from the family centre in Hamilton. IMO they would have far more experience than a sales person as getting babies onto bottles is a big part of what they do.
I thought about it as I too had been told to get the 0-6 month one too and as I have a good let down when I was trying with the 0-6 teats she would get frustrated because the milk was coming out too slow. The 6+ ones are still slower than her feeding off me. She feeds in about 5 minutes from me but takes at least 15 with a bottle.

perhaps i should get the criss cut one then so she can get more out, i was just put off the size of the actual teat for the 6+ one as she was never keen on a dummy being put in her mouth either

My DD never liked the dummy either. I use the med flow 6+ month ones and find them fine. She still prefers me to the bottle which is what I wanted. The family centre recommends the cross cut but I was concerned that she'd start to prefer bottles so went with the med flow instead. In my experience an older baby will get frustrated if you try them on a too slow teat.

The cross cut one only releases milk when they suck, Imo this is slower than a 0-6. At work we only really use these ones if the baby has to have a bottle, and are breastfeeding, so dont want them to get used to bottle feeding. (In a prem unit)
If she is going to be having bottles regularly then go with a standard teat.
Have you thought about the closer to nature bottles, alot of people have great sucess with them.

well i only want to get her to accept the bottle so it could be used for an occasional feed. I still intend to breastfeed until she is atleast one, then slowly wean her over a few months after that. So all I am wanting to achieve is for her to be able to have a bottle if I need to go out. I have a big function coming up for my husbands work, and I need her to have one that night!

Janini I found that as DD was older when she first took a bottle the closer to nature/advent teats were too soft and she just pushed the teat with her tongue so she didn't take it in her mouth properly. A lot of people find that and once I stopped trying with those bottles she took to the Nuk ones way quicker!
Kirstine when I first introduced DD to the bottle I offered it (or got someone else to) around about her 2nd feed before she was too hungry. If she didn't take it I'd feed her and then offer the bottle again at her 3rd feed. It took about 2 weeks before she was taking it consistently but she still has the occasional time where she refuses it.

I had a booby baby who flat out refused the bottle and I finally had success with a chuchu teat. Breastmates website sells them, not sure where else you can get them. The teat is supposedly the same action as breastfeeding so the baby actually has to suck to get anything out of it.
They are pricey, but no need to buy different sizes as you use the same one all the way through.
Worth a try if Nuk doesn't work out (it didn't for us!) I'm still breastfeeding, but if I'm out DD2 will take a bottle without a fuss now, such a relief!
