When is the "right time" to have a baby shower? And what sort of things are good to keep your guests occupied? And who should invite them, me, or my mum or someone? Not sure on the correct etiquette!

Hey!!

I was going to have my baby shower at about 36 weeks but in the end dawdled and so we didn't end up having one!

But my good friend had hers at 32 weeks and from what I've seen most people usually have them after 30 weeks.

Lots of games... We played one with string where you have to guesstimate how big the person having the baby's belly is with the string if that makes sense and the person who is closest gets a prize! So my mate had baby bottles from the $2 shops that were filled with lollies for prizes but you can have whatever you like!

Another common game is one where you have different baby food like apple puree, pear puree, apple + custard puree or whatever and people have to guess what flavour it is.

You can do Bingo, my friend did hers where we had to fill the grid with gifts we thought she'd get from everyone and as she opened the presents if they came up we crossed it off.

A-Z of names and first person to get as many names as they can girls or boys in 1min wins.

My friend also had 'mini food' to snack on through out so mini hot dogs, mini sausage rolls, mini sandwiches... Mini cookies, mini muffins etc!

And as for sending out invites... Not sure... My friends one was from her and her other friend who threw her baby shower! Is your mum throwing your baby shower?

I threw my friend a baby shower couple months ago and had the same guestimate game for the tummy size. Almost everyone well over estimated (we must have thought her belly wwas huge). She was about 36 weeks I think. I sent out invites but she helped with guest list and even dropped some off for me if I didnt know them. We had it on Sat afternoon and I asked everyone to bring a plate ofr afternoon tea so we could have a snack.
I also got everyone to write down their predictions for due date, sex, length, weight and time and kept them till bub was born.
A quiz about babies is also good - biggest baby born? smallest baby born? oldest mum or dad? most children to one mummy? that sort of thing.
Good luck and have fun!!

My baby shower for Callum was when I was not quite 31 weeks. My bestie hosted it for me, she just asked me for a list of people I'd like to invite and their email addresses and made sure the date was OK for DH and I and then told me when/where to show up! We did a quiz about pregnancy/babies, a celebrity baby name quiz (match the baby's name to the celeb parent) and the string game where people guess how big you are. LOTS of laughs

This time round my baby shower will be in a couple of week's time so hopefully I'll still be pregnant! Same friend is organising it and as it's my 2nd and we have everything we need I've asked her to say no presents (but I know my friends and I don't think they'll listen! )

I've hosted two baby showers - one for a friend and my house. I invited everyone and apart from the date it was a surprise shower. We didn't do games (although I had a couple lined up) as they didn't seem appropriate, we were having too much fun anyway. I served scones, little sandwiches, cupcakes and everyone brought a plate and/or a bottle of bubbles - this was back when the only pregnant friends were myself and the mum-to-be!

The second one was after C had arrived so I sent out the invites but had the afternoon tea at a hotel (so high tea) and everyone paid for themselves and a bit extra to cover N's afternoon tea too. No games as we were out in public

I am going to another friend's shower next month and instead of presents for the baby we're all contributing to a prenatal massage and facial for her!

Lots of different options out there. Have fun!!

my best friend organised a lovely shower for me when I was 35 weeks, and she sent out the invites to a list of people she asked me to give her.

She organised great games - there was one where she melted diferent chocolate bars and smeared them in to nappies and people had to guess the choc bar from the smell and appearance..kinda gross but lots of laughs.

then there was the usual who's fastest at dressing a doll, putting on a nappy etc game

she also had pass the parcel, which ended up with me and it was a lovely baby journal

and then a weird one which was actually the one that kept people intrigued the most - 24 tiny gold safety pins buried in a big bowl of rice..you were blindfolded and had a minute to pull out as many safety pins as you could. very difficult! people who make a lot of pastry (rubbing the butter in to the flour) were the best at it!

We had an awesome time!

I can't remember at what stage I or my friend had our baby showers, possibly around the 35 - 38 week mark?
At my friends shower we played the measure belly size, name the baby food and guess how many yellow m&m's are in the baby bottle. This was her 2nd baby shower actually called a freezer party. Instead of presents we made some sort of food which could be frozen so that they had some easy dinners for the first few weeks.

At my shower, we played this nappy game where you had to guess what was in the nappy. i.e there were about 5 diff nappies one had melted peanut choc, one had vegiemite etc ( whatever foodstuff you could put in a nappy to look like poo ), each person had to sniff or taste and write down what you thought it was.
We also played the memory game where there are 20 baby related things on a tray and you get to have a quick look and then you have a certain amount of time to write them all down.

My cousin organised my shower, I just gave her a list of people to invite and she did the rest.

Awesome game ideas ladies, thank you for these! Hmm am thinking I might try have mine before 30 weeks when I am hopefully past the MS and not too large or tired (maybe 27 weeks or something). My husband said he would get his sister to send out invites for it and organise, cuz he thought it would seem funny coming from me!

Not having a baby shower as such, we're moving house so am planning on having a housewarming/baby welcoming BBQ on Labour weekend Sunday. I'll be 37 weeks by then. Mostly a welcome to the neighbourhood and a chance to catch up with Akl friends and family before baby arrives as no doubt will be a bit busy to see people then.

What time of day did you have your baby shower?
Who did you invite?
Was it a women only thing or did you invite partners as well?

I've held two baby showers for friends and been to one other.

Two were afternoon tea type events (starting around 1.30pm - both were Sundays) and were women from the workplace only. One was bring $5 to cover food, prizes etc, the other one was bring a plate or contribute $5 to food/prizes.

The other one I held started off as a bbq lunch with men and women invited (on a Saturday). DH and I and the couple having the baby paid for the food but it was BYO beer, wine etc. The men went off to the pub after lunch to watch cricket while the women stayed behind and played the games.

I thought the one with men and women worked really well, but you have to have someone who can lead off all the men at a particular time so the women can do the girly silly stuff.

I'm going to ask two friends of mine to do mine (I think they'll work reasonably well together - one is a closer friend than the other, but the other one is really organised and loves planning stuff like this). I think if I wait for someone to offer, it won't happen (the two friends I've held them for no longer live locally).

The baby showers and mine were all women only events. Although when SIL had her baby shower my Bro also had one at the same time, although we left all the kids with the men!!
Mostly they were at afternoon tea time, although the one I threw for a friend was in the morning as it suited her and her DH best, it was their 2nd child and it worked for the DH to take DS out in the morning

All the ones I've been to/hosted have started around 2.30-3.30pm. They're usually an afternoon tea and over by 5.30ish because most of the attendees have kids to get home to and feed

They've all been women-only but usually out of practicality - again, because most of us have young babies or toddlers someone (ie DH) has to stay home and look after the kids. Plus it's easier to play silly games when it's just the girls

My first baby shower I/my friend invited all my close girlfriends, there were about 10 of us I think? I had only just started a new job so didn't invite anyone from work.

This time was close girlfriends again, mostly coffee group mums plus the girlfriends I knew before C was born. Not everyone knew each other either time but seemed to be a good mix. Was probably a better mix of girls this time round as the line between "single girl about town" and "mum of ___" is becoming more blurred amongst my social circle lol.

Hmmmmm I wonder how my baby shower planning is coming along? Hmmmm?

Last time we had a lunch at a cafe and it was close female friends and family.

This time I think we'll do a morning tea at a cafe (no pressies) and just have a little celebration.  Although I kind of need to go over the guest list with my friend who's helping me organise it.....I can see it getting to be quite big lol

My work place is all male nothing expected from them.
I'll be living in a new city in 2 weeks time thought it would be a good excuse to meet people etc.

I'm always worried when organising these things that no one will come.

I worried first time around that noone would come, this time I'm worried how not to invite people in case they ALL come and we run out of room at the cafe!  It's too hard when I like pretty much everyone in my life lol
