At what point am I meant to lower the cot base down? To start with we kept the side down but as soon as he started crawling we put the side up and leave it up.

He stands sometimes but the side is up to his chest, so I was thinking that's ok but what do you think?   Is it safe?

I find it difficult to lower him in already and DH has made me a step to help with that, so if it's lower I'm guessing it's going to be harder (which is why we haven't lowered it yet) - but obviously safety comes first!

If he can stand then I'd personally lower it

i lowered it once DS could sit, i figure if he could sit up he could easily pull him self up without me realising. its only a wee bit of momentum needed and then can fling them self over the edge. of stand on bunched up blankets etc.

Yeah we did the same as the others, as soon as he could stand we lowered it.  Initially it certainly made it harder getting him out but after he perfected standing it made it easier

Chelle, we've lowered ours already and Alex is the same age as Cooper. It's not too bad lowering him in and getting him out, just a matter of getting used to it!

Cool, thanks girls, we'll lower it on the weekend, sounds like it's safer to do so. We were at Plunket today too and so I thought I'd ask her and she said the same.

Plunket told me it should be lowered once they are sitting and there nose is the same height as the top of the cot rail.

I moved ours when dd was about 8 months or just over.

I'll do the nose test when DS wakes, but probably get DH to lower it this afternoon. Kinda wish I'd sorted out doing the sleep from awake thing already now to make lowering him easier.... oh well

i'm sorry but i cant help wondering how short you are to need a step to put him down when the cot isnt even lowered...

i know that i hated it when hubby would get the kids up and not lower the side cause it made it harder to put them back later...

Hehe, i'm the same we haven't lowered ours yet, but when the side is up I really struggle to get her in and out, so I hate to think what it will be like when the mattress goes down.... good idea about the step!

BTW I'm about 5'2

I'm 1.65m and I know I am going to find it hard to put DS in when we put the cot down. I also like to give him a kiss before leaving the room so feel sad that I won't be able to reach. When we looked for cots we delliberately chose one that was not super high but obviously we are still short arses compared to the cot makers!
Also find it hard to put DS in his portacot tho and that is super low to the ground so assume it is just the angles more than anything (angles between the bottom and the sides I mean)

I'm also not looking forward to lowering the cot level - will make the patting thing really challenging!!!!

I can't believe how long some of you have left yours up! I put it down around 5 months I think, as soon as DD could sit up.

I'm 1.67m and it was an adjustment having to bend the extra bit lower, but it wasn't hard, just different. After a week or two, I didn't even think about it.

Sometimes I settle her with the side down and put it up once she's asleep, or sometimes I just reach through the bars if I need to. Mostly I still rock her to sleep on my lap though and put her in asleep.

Bizzy I'm with you on the DJ leaving the side up thing, it used to drive me MENTAL!! Especially when you have an asleep child in your arms from the car, go to put them in the cot and HELLO!! You need to be made of rubber to not drop them onto the mattress!!!!

hehe yeah I'm 158cm, (so just over 5'2) - the steps only about the thickness of a phone book but it makes all the difference as I need to be up that little bit more to bend and tippy toes doesn't quite work. Nearly, just not quite I don't do the whole side down and then put it up as half the time I put him down asleep or nearly asleep so don't want to wake him if I bang it around.

I did the nose test and sitting the top was at his forehead so maybe it's a high cot :)

T-Rex - I think I was imagining that you didn't need to lower it till they were likely to think about jumping over it, but I guess not.

We lowered it yesterday and it wasn't as hard as I thought, less harder than when we lifted the side, though I nearly dropped him the last little bit the first time
