I had a scan at 5w5d as I had tummy pains and it was gel on tummy. As dating scans are about the same time I would think it would also be gel on tummy

Depends on how far along you are as early on, the internal may give more accurate measurements.
If you want to see a heartbeat, wait till 7 weeks.
Is there a reason you're asking

Ive had internal and gel on tummy ones for dating scans, but not as early as 5 weeks. Think my earliest was 7 weeks (as the date calculated at the dating scan not LMP or ov date).

My first appointment with my Ob this time round was when I thought I was 5 and a bit weeks. He did a scan on my tummy with the gel and could see the sac but not much else, he thought my dates were out by a week.
Went back 3 weeks later and a) I was right all along and b) could see a lot more. Pretty sure we saw the heartbeat at that second scan.

I had dating scans at 6 weeks. One ectopic which they ended up doing an internal. The more recent was gel at 6w2d, I knew very early on (4 weeks) I was pregnant due to morning sickness but doctor said to leave the scan until the 6 week. We were also able to see baby's heartbeat at this scan, which was very reassuring.

He he, thanks guys. We're so excited! It still doesn't really feel real though. After everything we went through to get DS I can't believe we've been so lucky this time

Congrats I had a dating scan at five weeks, which was gel on tummy, and then another scan at eight weeks which was an internal... so who knows? I think they go for the gel ones where possible.

 Congrats!
I have had early scans with all three of my pregnancys, so one at 7 weeks, one at 6 weeks and one at 8 weeks.
My 7 weeks one, was my m/c baby, and the other two Caden and Bella obviously lol.
They were all Gel on my tummy.
