    Posted: 28 September 2010 at 12:36pm
So I'm after some opinions on which banks offer the best services.

I am currently with TSB, but they a) don't offer interest on savings accounts and b) don't offer a Debit card.

I am after somewhere that I can have a few accounts (bills, savings, car, general etc.) as well as a debit card, and am also thinking about opening an account for Jade and Amber to put a small amount of money in per week. I don't want to have to pay much in fees - I mainly use electronic banking (eftpos and internet banking).

Who do you recommend, and why?

We have bnz total money which means we can have up to 10 accounts. All the accounts earn interest every month. It costs us $10 a month but I just love being able to have that many accs and I can open them online myself.

BNZ because they have total money.
plus you get flybuys if you have a credit card.
DP has a credit card, uses it as his eftpos card, then puts the money in each fortnights pay.
so hes still using his own money - but gets flybuys on it. it got us a breadmaker

and you can have your 10 accounts max all linked up with total money, or you can open the girls one each (in there name) and have 8 yourself, and link them together for the 10 total money ones. (so im lead to beleive)

I would rate national bank among the top. Also ASB is very good. BNZ is also fine. I'm not sure about kiwibank as I have never dealt with them.

Westpac is fine but they are not always the best at keeping information confidential i.e. I found out about an account my grandma had in trust for me that I shouldnt have through them, also the same thing happened with accounts my uncle had for me and my brother. my credit card also got sent to my mils house instead of to me.

I have had nothing but problems with TSB so in my experience would not recommend. But we do have a debit card so i'm not sure why you wouldnt. But we get charged for absolutely everything.

Currently I we are with the national bank, tsb and westpac. We are looking to get out of tsb as soon as our mortgage is up and either go to national or westpac depending on who has the best deal.

We're with National, on the whole pretty good. Our mortgage is with Kiwibank and I find them fantastic for that but I don't know if I'd do my day to day banking with them.

Do you mean a Visa Debit card? The one that you can use like a visa but that you've got your own funds on already?

We are with National and Westpac.

I like national better than westpac but accounts/kiwisaver for DD were better with westpac so we have an account with them.

National have been fantastic I've been with them for over 10 years and never considered changing and DP moved his banking across when we combined finances too.

In my lifetime I've been with ASB, BNZ, National, Kiwibank and RaboDirect.

DH and I were both with National when we got together, but switched to Kiwibank at the start of the year so we could get a Welcome Home Loan through them. We also have a savings account with RaboDirect.

I absolutely love RaboDirect for savings! It's an online only account and you transfer money into and out of a nominated account (eg. my Kiwibank account). My savings are getting the best interest rate and even though I can get access to the $'s whenever I want they are out of sight and out of mind so I'm not as likely to dip in!!! Oh, and you can open as many accounts as you want and there's no minimum and no fees.

You can also get credit cards with BNZ that do airpoints instead of flybuys which is what we do. We have like 800 airpoints sitting there

We have been with kiwibank for awhile & we are happy with them. We have an everyday account that we pay no fees on & a saving account.
We have a debit card & no credit cards.

I am thinking of opening up a few more accounts & kids acounts. But we are going to do kiwisaver for the kids also.

We're with national bank and BNZ. Mortgage with NB but we run pretty much all our savings through BNZ with the total money account. We have a debit plus card with BNZ it's great as we have to transfer the $$ through to it so it reduces impulse shopping. We've got about 8 accounts set up for different stuff, it's WONDERFUL!

Ditto! We don't pay any fees and I find their internet banking awesome.

Streamline has no fees for electronic transactions. Their banking is realtime so no delays and I know it sounds silly, but some banks only let you put numbers as references and that is a pain when you look back at your statements, but asb let you put letters as references eg from Mum and Dad or whatever.

Another vote for BNZ total money. We have pocket money accounts, a general account, an account for each of the kids, a mortgage account, the mortgage itself, credit cards, a christmas account, and a holiday account...and we pay the one fee. Brill!

Totally recommend BNZ! Same reasons as above

I can't UNrecommend ASB enough they have been nothing but dreadful in their dealings with us!! They charge us for anything they possibly can, refused to help us when DPs hours/income got cut and their call staff can be so rude!! I would never use them again nor could I recommend them to anyone!

I've got no problems whatsoever with TSB, but their services that they offer are very restricted unless you have a significant amount in your accounts. I've been with them since I was about 7, on and off, and don't pay any fees at all. I didn't even know they offered the debit card....

clover - yep I mean like a VISA debit. I don't want a credit card (and most people probably wouldn't give me one anyway, even though I can get a mortgage - go figure) but sometimes there's stuff that I like to buy online, so need the VISA aspect of it.

I think I'm going to have to look at BNZ...

Totally with astral monkey about RaboDirect, we have our savings with them too. Good interest rates, really easy to use and you can have multiple accounts with no fees. We have a savings account for Campbell, as well as for us and an emergency fund account. Awesome!
