Hey guys,

We are flying for the first time soon and was wondering whether it was worthwhile buying a travel bag for our mountain buggy? I don't want it to get damaged on the plane.

What do you reckon?

We didn't bother either and that was long haul to UK (and a few times too). It has scratches etc but no idea if they happened on the plane or just from normal wear and tear from everyday use. Could you see if your travel insurance would cover any damage if it did happen - though proving that would be difficult I suppose? I know Air NZ put the buggies in a big green bag - doesn't really protect them as such but would help with scratches I guess. Happy flying!

Air NZ has huge plastic bags you can request that your buggy/car seat is put into.

I keep these cause they are great for storage at home

I recommend the buggy bag! We have a P&T and I have used our travel bag soo often. I travelled once to Oz without it and the buggy was hammered. We now also use it when we are packing the car for a long car trip as makes it easier to pack.

If you are flying with air newzealand they give you a bag to put it into when you check it in, then they take it off the buggy before they send it out for you to collect

Are you planning on taking your buggy right up to the gate? I think it is possibly taken better care of then. We recently went to England, and did several short flights between there and Greece also - our buggy was fine. We did however decide to take a cheapy rather than our McClaren, simply for ease of transport and space, so we bought a little $50 umbrella fold up from BabyCity. It was worth doing as it was light and very easy to transport, but it depends on your needs - our DD was 2 so only needed a stroller.

Thanks Kaz, so sweet of you to offer! We flew a few days ago so didn't get a chance to take up your offer, but thank you! We also ended up borrowing a buggy off a friend.

Another question for everyone though - how much baby stuff can you take on planes as checked luggage for free? I know you can take a buggy and carseat for free but what about a portacot? High chair?

Carseat is free but anything else will count as one piece of luggage unfortunately. Your baby is allowed the same luggage allowance as you are but a cot/pushchair etc will count as a piece.

i rang airnz yesterday and my buggy is free, im taking one carseat on the plane for one of the kids to sit on and checking the other carseat and was told they were all going to be free and not contribute towards anything. i am taking a large suitcase for me and 1 per kid. we have to pay an extra $40au because we only have 2 seats booked and 3 suitcases we get charged for one peice of extra luggage :)

When we flew at Xmas the stroller, portacot & car seat were all free to check in & didn't contribute to weight. You can also take your handbag, a carry on luggage bag & one baby bag per baby onto the plane.
