I wouldn't use sunscreen on a baby younger than 6 months, and even after that I'd try to delay it as long as possible (up to 1yr) and make sure they are somehow covered at all times - be it by placing them in the shade or having them in appropriate clothing.

Posted this in the First Babies forum but thought I'd copy it here as well just in case you didn't see it:
Invisible Zinc is a good option. We used this on Jude last summer (when he was around 4 months old). It is a physical sunscreen rather than a chemical sunscreen. The key agent zinc oxide is already a key ingredient in many baby creams and skin salves anyway.
There is a Junior one in the range, but we just got the normal one as an examination of the ingredients revealed the only real difference between them was the junior one was in a roll on bottle and the normal one was in a pump bottle
It is a wee bit more expensive than other sunscreens but it lasts for ages and was the one I felt most comfortable using on such a small baby. We tried to cover up and stay under shade as much as possible but of course that's not always possible in the height of summer - so sunscreen was needed!

We have Hawaiian tropic baby faces and tender places. DD has natural sunprotection being half samoan but even so I put sunscreen on her when we're out playing otherwise she is covered by the sunshade etc.
Now that she has hair I don't have to put it on her head!! YAY!!!
Now to teach her to keep her sunglasses and hat on

Im having my baby in December which is going to be right in the midst of the summer sun. I am really fair and so is DH so I think there's an excellent chance our baby will be too and Im terrified of him being burnt.
He wont be 6 months before the summer is over so is there nothing I can put on him sunscreen wise? I have a sun hat for him and will keep him covered and not put him in the sun- which is easy enough as I don't sit in the sun myself for the same reasons, but I'm worried about incidental day to day exposure, as I get burnt sometimes just walking down the road at the shops!
Any advice?

MrsH I went to the health shop and got one, was really expensive but I'm happy with the ingrediants- doesn't seem like anything too nasty. Maybe you could go talk to them? I'm sure they'd come up with something good for you to use. I was never too worried about chemicals on myself-but I do have sensitive skin, DS seems to have inherited my sensitive skin so I wanted something natural (so less irritating) and effective

Hippiemum Obviously all of us try and keep our bubs out of the strong vicious NZ sun.. and Im not saying I want her to sunbathe or anything!... but its impossible to keep them 100% out of the sun- and for these short times I want it. I.e... I walk her everyday on the farm in a front pack. a sun hat will help etc.. but her face is somewhat exposed still. My husband plays horse polo so we are outside all the time in the summer... even walking from the car to a shady spot she will be exposed.. or from the shady spot to the horse truck. ..even if just on a small part of her.
To the others- thank you for your suggestions!!! I have heard invisable zinc is good!

When she was little I used to have a light muslin cloth that I'd put over the pram/backpack/baby to keep her covered. Now she's bigger it's a lot harder cos she's crawling all over the show so will have to look at sunscreen. But for a baby I found it very realistic to be out and about and just keep the baby covered when outside.

My DD was born in Nov and I didn't use sunscreen. Both DP and I have fair skin and she does too. She was cuddled in a moby a lot and I put a hat on her then did the same as T rex and used thick muslin cloths as a sun shade. In the pram I used the shade cover.
The most sun she would have gotten was getting out of the car and into pram/carrier. And even then we did that in the shade so she was only in the sun for a few seconds.
We also went to a garden wedding in Feb and she was in a summer dress so I was a bit concerned but by staying in the shade as much as possible and using her hat and muslin when in the sun we were fine.

Just make sure you test it on a small patch of skin first to double check to reactions but from chemist/supermarket/warehouse there is a brand Hawaiian Tropic (pink spray bottle) 'Baby faces & tender places' 45SPF sunscreen. Fine on babies/infants and toddlers (according to my chemist) - sensitive skin formula and pediatrician tested. But always remember a hat, and keep them covered, sit in the shade... Etc. Try to avoid going out between 11-4pm and you can still get burnt on an overcast/cloudy day!
Oh and I was told it's a good idea to apply sunscreen 1 hour before going out in the sun.

I use BabyBaby Sunscreen It's only SP15+ but that means that it has lower chemical content and less likely to cause skin reactions

We got "hamilton Toddler" after reading up on recomendations for it. Our daughter has sensitive skin and suffers from excema, and im glad to say that after 3 applications over the weekend, her skin still looks good and shows no reaction, so a winner for me

I have got the Aveeno Baby Sunscreen but have not used it yet. I use the Aveeno Bath Wash and Moisturiser and really like it, hence going with the sunblock.
I do love Dr Hauschka products for myself though so would have gone for this option too.
