    Posted: 02 November 2010 at 11:53pm
I'm lying in bed unable to sleep because my dogs are barking, my dogs are barking because the horses in the paddock behind us are tearing around in circles, because some MORON thinks 11.45pm on a Tuesday night is a brilliant time to try out their fireworks. It happens every year & will no doubt carry on for the next fortnight. I personally don't see the need for backyard fireworks, surely if you're that interested a public display is better anyway? What does everyone else think?

Same thing happened to us on Monday night at 1am!!! I was so mad, I hate them and wish they were banned altogether. I'm so not looking forward to the next few weeks with them going off.

ETA - I'm not against public displays and letting them off in the evening doesn't bother me, it's the ones that set them off after 10/11pm at night for weeks after guy fawkes that drive me up the wall.

Hmmm, what do I think? I think it should be illegal to let off fireworks on the wrong day without a permit! My poor doggy is already suffering the terrors this year.

I have nothing against the public firework displays that are put on, but it really annoys me when people do it right next door, we just moved this year and are in a block of units so not sure what the neighborhood does for guyfawkes, hope its nothing too extreme, this time of year is so annoying, especially with 2 cats and a baby

Agree, think there should be public displays only. Aside from the annoyoance factor they are damn dangerous.

I hate the bloody things and they need to ban them! We went to a great fireworks display on Saturday night and the kids loved it.... I'd be happier if they just had those.

Love them! It's only for one week, I'm sure everybody can live with it for that long.

I agree they should only be for public displays, unfortunately there are too many idiots around who ruin it for everyone else!

I love them, and will be having guy fawkes here with with DD besties and their kids and SIL's bros who I will probably get to let them off (they're 14 and 16) so I can hold DD. I don't see the harm. DD once asleep sleeps through everything!

I know that people do stupid things with them, and it sucks when people get hurt and I get angry when kids get hurt because of things, but if an adult/teenager who knows better hurts themself then I'm one of those well its your own fault ppl.

We will get a small box so don't spend much on them...cheaper than going to a show that's for sure. Last yr DS2 spent most of it inside as he did not like the noise but did join in with the sparklers.

DH lets everything off & keeps a hose handy. We don't have a very big space but always keep on eye on things.

I quite like sitting on the deck watching the neighbourhood go mad with them

We didn't have fireworks when I was a kid. While all my friends and neighbours were setting off skyrockets I was sitting at my window watching the sky to try and see some - it sucked! Dad hated them, and even though he took us to big displays he wouldn't have them at home.

All the good fireworks are banned now anyway, so I'm not all that keen to have them at home (waste of money), but I don't mind other people setting them off - I can still sit at my window and watch!

Nothing beats the excitement of lighting a firework and waiting for it to go off. A perfect time to teach kids how to be responsible instead of sheltering them away from them only to get hurt later by not knowing how to be safe.

I don't think that 11pm is acceptable. 9-10pm is ok. We should all follow noise control laws so if someone is letting them off at an unreasonable hour I think a call to noise control is perfectly acceptable.

So we love them It is only for one week a year.

I'm on the fence, I love them, hate their prices, hate that there are idiots around.

Did you know that twice YES TWICE the amount of fireworks have been imported in NZ this year!! 11 something a rather tonnes!

I dislike the displays as they are far to late for the kids, you never get home before 11pm cause of the traffic.

I am aware they are on & we are making sure the dog is in at dusk instead of later.

They're being let off a block away again, horses going mental, sheep in another paddock are running from one end to the other terrified. We live in a small rural town, & calling noise control here isn't an option, & obviously for the horse & sheep owners keeping them inside isn't an option either. I agree it is a case of a few idiots ruining it for the rest, unfortunately it seems we have an awful lot of idiots around here.

The displays need to be pretty late in the summer though otherwise it isn't dark enough, that's the catch I guess.

They don't bother me too much, it's been pretty quiet around our house. A couple of years ago the neighbours kids managed to set their backyard on fire.....

I agree that backyard use should be banned! It may be that the idiots spoil it for other responsible adults, but that's how should be anyway. In Port Chalmers, we had people down the road who stockpiled their fireworks and let them off whenever they bloody pleased, anytime of the year!

I think it should just be public displays, or maybe a good idea would be that you could apply for a permit to have a semi-organised private display on Guy Fawkes Day, that way responsible adults could do something without the idiots spoiling it.

i think backyard displays are fine and really good fun for kids. however. having 2 young children my views on them have slightly changed. guyfawkes is the 5th november, you should only be allowed to let them off on that day/night and maybe a small fine if caught doing them on other days. because im sick of people letting them off at all hours and waking my daughter up, she is such a light sleeper and its so hard to settle her
