We're having some ummm... interesting... problems with Kiya at the moment. She's going to be 6 next week, but often acts like she's younger than Josiah (who will be 2 in a couple of months). She will play with his toys happier than she'll play with her own... and her behaviour often reflects the sort we'd expect of someone half her age.

The other thing that's going on is a major oral fixation. Everything (and I mean everything!!!) is ending up in her mouth. We're mainly trying to get her to stop sucking and biting on her clothes and hair... then we'll work on toys, her toothbrush and comb handles, that sort of thing.

Any suggestions on how to get her to act her age?

It sounds like it could be jealousy towards Josiah? Does Josiah put things in his mouth like that? I'm guessing he does, as Ella still does at almost 3

I don't have any advice as I haven't been through that, but that's what it seems like from what you've said.. hope someone else can help.

We wondered about Kiya copying Josiah (as Kiya copies most of Josiah's behaviour) but he doesn't put things in his mouth much at all. It wouldn't be surprising if he did given his age, but putting things in his mouth was something Josiah stopped relatively quickly. Josiah has just started doing it more often - copying Kiya!

Oh boy my older girls copy each other and it's such a nuisance at times lol!

Does Kiya get to have any special mummy time for herself? I wonder if she thinks Josiah and Xavier get all the attention these days and she's missing out - especially cause she is at school (away from you) but the others stay with you all day (I presume). I just wonder if there is some way to carve out half an hour every day or every second day where it's just you two and not just homework either.

I find Maya goes a bit feral when she doesn't have her "Mummy and Maya" time. I try to make a point of taking her out at least once a week on my own. Sometimes we go out for coffee (or "fluffies") or to a movie, but sometimes we just go out visiting or to the park (altho it's fast getting to chilly for that).

Maya really looks forward to it, she calls them our "dates".

I wonder if she is going back to what she knows.. ie she has mastered his toys a long time ago, but hers are harder more complex.. and sometimes even if they kmow how to use them or play with them, they don't unless they have had someone there actively playing and spending alone quality time with them.. Ie making sure she has time with both you and N just playing, with dolls, doing puzzles, all the big girl stuff, so she sees that she can do these just as well, and still gets the teaching and play time.

With the putting things in their mouth. It s a weird one. I nannied a girl the same age with actually the same age siblings.. and she did the same thing.. alot.

I wondered about her prefering Josiah's toys because they are easier, Janine, but it doesn't quite work out right... eg: they both have their own lego - Kiya's is Duplo, Josiah's is Quatro (twice the size of duplo) and she used to play with hers fine until Josiah got his! They've got lots of similar toys, and she consistantly would rather play with his version rather than her own.

becca not to sure about the putting thnigs in her mouth, but I think she just wants so "mommy time". My SIL and her little girl go on dates once a month and charlotte( her daughter) gets to choose what they do and it seems to work really well for them
Good luck

hows it going with this becca.

wanted to say that my husbands son regressed after both the boys were born and it seemed the older he was the worse the regression.

When toby was born he started to wet himself and suck toys and talk baby - and he was 8.

in the end we told him that when he was a baby we loved him lots but we didnt need him to be a baby now cause we loved him the way he was...and it seemed to stop the behaviour.
