I am a SAHM with 2 girls, 16months and 3months and I am bored and frustrated. I live in a smallish town and I am finding activities pretty limited. We do playcentre and music, and walks to playgrounds etc. We've tried 2 plunket playgroups. DD1 like one of them but it is only once a month and the other one was too busy and neither of us enjoyed it.
My DF works at home full time, so we really need to be out of the house every (or most) mornings.
We tried Chipmunks the other day, and I was disgusted with the filth so that if definitely not an option for the future. I am not being pedantic...the areas right next to the playground was covered in dust There are not even child friendly cafes....well, apart from a box of old broken toys hanging about.

I would love to know what you have in your area for children? I want to explore maybe possibilities of starting something up...or maybe I just need to come to realisation that that is all there is..

So what are your regular activities for young ones?

we made a garden...looking forward to harvesting our cherry tomatoes soon

set up a play area for them - somewhere safe for paint and messy play

do something for yourself ... pop the babies in a buggy and pound the pavement

You dont say where you are so Im not sure what else is available to you but does the local gym have a creche?

I live in timaru, there are no gyms with creches ( well, I am pretty certain there isn't).

Yes a mess area is great, must get onto getting some paints etc. Was going to wait for xmas, but earlier wont matter, just one less present, they wont know.

Still- am very keen to be out of the house as I often end up cleaning etc.

Other than music, are there any sortd of classes that toddlers go to? Like a gym toddler gym type thing?

My kids do kindy gym at our local YMCA once a week. They love it and it tires them out
They have a messy area - mainly called my house lol but they have a playroom where all the messy things like paint etc are.
What about starting a mums walk or something, advertise at your plunket and other mums might join you on it then you could all go to a park or something? Of course this is more of a summer activity but you could find other mums in the same position as you who'd like to get together.

Good luck

No creches at gyms here pekay. Some in my coffee group do swimming but you have to go to Oamaru or Ashburton... also would be hard with two kids which is why I haven't gone will be awesome once the aquatic centre here gets done but thats a while away.

I think there is quite alot of different play groups /coffee group/ music things I don't know if there is a walking thing already organised. Could be that you have to try a few before you find one you like?

I will probably be in same boat next year as everyone in my coffee group will be back at work full or part time so I don't know if we will continue to meet.

Agree about cafes not being very child friendly here I did go out to the stables they have one box of toys but at least there is plenty of room there and older kids might like looking at the ponies, sheep and birds.

Congrats full house on the twins on the way my two are getting really fun now so cute seeing them start to interact with each other!

Im in Timaru as well....have you been out to shearers quaters? Its a café out seadown way - they have a (half constructed at the moment) playground for kids, and heaps of super friendly animals (goats, deer, sheep, PIGLETS!!!, rabbits) that come running for petting and treats. Never actually taken a kid there though so i don't know how kid friendly it really is.

And you're right, no gyms with creche, parents centre run some toddler music-movement classes and a couple more that would suit the age-range of your kids. Might be worth looking into?

See, I don't think it's that bad here at all. Obviously not as much going on as a main centre like Chch or Dunedin but I still think there's quite a bit about to do. Although as you know I am totally with you on the chipmunks thing, ew ew ew! For me I think I would find it hard feeling I needed to be out every day, I think really wherever you lived you might find it hard to find something organised and exciting every day, or at least do that without breaking the bank.

I know it's a bit weather dependant but I think the Bay area is just awesome for families and as a rule we are pretty lucky with the weather by and large. If it didn't involve a drive into town for me I'd be up for a regular walking group, maybe through the scenic. Or down the bay along the boardwalk and getting on some of those exercise things they've put down there. Shearers would be good for a look at the animals etc.

Would a second morning at Playcentre be an option for you?

When you say you are thinking of starting something up, what do you have in mind?

I can sympathise...Timaru would be a big town in comparison (there's 1300 people here). I do playcentre 3 mornings, and aquatots. My DD is the same age as your eldest, 16 months. I love staying with my family in NP as there's so much great free stuff to do.

Swimming is great, (and they sleep really well after) can you team up with another Mum to look after your 3 month old?

I find it hard with a non-walker to do stuff like, baking gardening etc, she'll be there in a few months, but not yet can't wait.

We do music at the parents centre twice a week.

I will investigate the gymnastics/gym thing in the new year.

I might consider a 2nd day at playcentre when Ella is older, like crawling and not so delicate.

We went to the sharers quarters a couple week ago, but once you add in petrol as is 20minutes away, can't be done all the time.

We do go swimming in oamaru when we can afford too, but now that I have 2, it can only be done on the weekends when DF can come.

Riverstone Resturant is great for kids...but again, that is 45minutes away.

I only know about the playgroups at the plunkets. We started going to the one on Kiwi drive but it is only once a month, we have strted meeting occasionally inbetween though. The one on dee st is weekly, but we didn't enjoy that one very much. They also have one in the afternoons, but Leah sleeps then. I am not sure if the other plunkets do them???

And are the other playgroups other than the ones at plunket?

Could do a walking tour bus.....get some mums together who would be keen, load up the buggy and go for a walk...

Pick out a few places to visit (old architecture, new buldings, monuments) and make some activity sheets for the kids (who are old enough) and give them a crayon and the sheet at the start... on the activity sheet you could have stuff like 'how many red cars were there?'... 'draw a picture of your favourite tree'... 'draw a picture of what you ate for lunch'... 'what colour was the sign where we had lunch'.... 'each time you saw a bird, draw a circle'

and so on.

how do you feel about volunteering? pop a sign up at a supermarket or 2... and on weekends (when im assuming your OH has the weekend off?) get the whole family involved in baking some long-shelf-life goodies and during the week, take the kids to rest homes to hand out what you have made (with their help)..... the older generation loves having people to chat with, the kids will be doted on and you can have a cuppa and some nice convo.

Start a swim group? could do some aqua jogging and combine it with letting the littilies have a swim. get one of those inflatable rings with the seat (for babies) and jog them up and down the pool, so bouncing and stuff like that.

do your kids love having their pics taken? take them out once a week (pick one day and this is 'that day') and take them out for a photo shoot.... on the beach, they can draw in the sand, at the park, in front of monuments/statues etc..... and think about 10 years from now you can see them in the same place and how they have grown...

HTH!!!

Oooooh, the art gallery is free and they often have activities for little ones (the 16mo, not the 3mo sadly...) like they have dress ups besides some paintings so the kids can pose like the art and have a picture taken etc, fun stuff like that. And it changes monthly i think so you can keep going back.

The library has story time one or two times a week which would be fun for the elder child as well though i know someone who takes her 4mo along. Thats free as well. Depending on who is reading, they really get the kids involved - making noises along with the book, that sort of thing.

Guess you could hit up the museum as well though i have no idea how kid friendly it is, i only know its free and they have some kind of kid activity, probably too old for your guys but they might like it...and its free as well.

Can't wait for the aqautic centre to open, i hope they have some water-bubs classes there i've heard you have to go to Oamaru for them

If you wanted to go to the pools here but two is too hard to handle we could all go in an OhBaby Swim Group . I'll get my bikini on for a good cause!

I'd also join a walking bus if you were lonely

Oh man, I feel jealous just hearing all the things you lot get to do. We have stuff all where I live AND we live an hour from any other towns which are all small and have not much either.
We have playgroup twice a week (and that is in the morning, not so great as bang on morning sleep time). Hmm actually I was gonna do a list but that is all we have here.

Supposedly we have learn to swim classes but the pool is not open, it only opens some of the year and it is supposed to be getting fixed so it is heated (WTF...it is hot here, why does it need heating??) but it is like 2-3 months late in completion!

Too hot to go for walks unless at the crack of dawn or at night time along with the bugs (and snakes and crocodiles....okay making up about the crocs).

I CANNOT wait to live in a decent town!!!!!!!!

When you think about it there is a bit to do here - i agree think it is a big ask to get out of the house everyday though.

If I get the wee job I applied for that will be two afternoons out of the house for me. I would like to take the twins out to something at least once a week either my coffee or playgroup or maybe a music thing the rest of the time think I'll be happy to be at home.

I would want to wait til my two are a little older before taking them swimming here i don't think they can be in the water for that long but otherwise going as a group is a good idea.

Also on a friday there is a music class some from my coffee group go to I keep meaning to go to cos they tell me there are heaps of nice old ladies who would help with the twins if one got grumpy. Think there are two sessions with a morning tea in the middle $3. It is run by a church though and they apparently stop and do a wee story but that wouldn't bother me think its the white church on wai iti but if you want to go pekay I could find out the times for sure.

We absolutely need to be out of the house everyday, preferably by 9am or we have tantrums, lol..

Jules, I do go to another one on Fridays, but I could always have a go at the waiiti rd one as that might be a little closer to us and I could incorporate a park visit if we walked...so that would actually be handy as we would be out most the morning instead of just an hour.

Bowie- town is a rare occurrence for us....taking 2 in would be far too risky.

I will def investigate the library after the school holidays.

not making a stab or anything - but expecting you to be out of the house every morning by a certain time (to me) is asking alot and tbh a bit rough!

Do you actually have to leave? or does OH just pack it in if there is noise? (playing, screaming etc)?

Does he have a certain office room (or area) of the house? Do the kids have a play room? Could they not just play outside?

Can OH start later so you arent bursting out the door before 9am?

You could start a playgroup and ask for toy donations from people who dont use them anymore? or a gold coin donation so you can get some toys for the group?

Ummmmmmmmmm.....I am the one that chooses to leave at 9am as a whole day at home to me gets borning and miss 16months is a lot happier and nicer to get out the door and do something...thats why we are out by 9am.
In fact, I am an expert at getting 2 kids ready and out the door by 9am, actually today, I even have an extra 5mins to jump online.
DF couldn't give 2hoots if we are home or not, I am the one that prefers to get away from him, I feel he needs the time out.
