 Topic: bit scarey Pamol!

Ok so yesterday we were at the doctor's and she told us to be really careful with pamol in children she said she had seen alot of cases of poisioning she said there is no system's except complete liver failer. I have never heard this before like I know not to over dose them, but did not know it could be so danagerous. So now being super paranoid me does not want to give it at all. Has anyone heard this before? Or seen it happen I was just  wondering how common it really is or if the Doctor was using a little bit of ascare tatic's.

Pamol is the leading cause of overdose with children. It is very scary, so yeah I have heard about it.

Thank's Bex it really scared me and hubby yesdterday we never overdose, but still it would be easy to asssume pamol was totally safe.

no its not tottly safe but most posioning are accentdental you shouldc only use it if bubs is in pain or has a fever and no morethen two days if not order by a doc thats what my doc told me

paracetomol (pamol) is apparently the easiest to OD on and that's for adults and kids. With Caitlin I always give her the lowest dose for her age range and only give it to her if she REALLY needs it (like before her jabs)

Yeah they can overdose on it, but only if you give them more than the dose they are required to have and less than 4 hrs apart.
My friend was telling me yesterday about her son, when he was 2 1/2 he climbed up and found the pamol bottle and drunk the entire contents, they had to take him to have his stomach pumped. This was before they invented child proof lids.

The doses listed on the bottle (or prescribed) are the lowest safe dose too - you would have to give twice that amount to cause a problem. When Sienna was in hospital post-op they were giving her far more than I would normally give them.
But it is pretty scary, mostly because it's advertised as being so safe, and because it's easily accessible.

My friend was telling me about her friend who has two children one 3yrs and the other 1yr and they both had chicken pox at the same time and the 3yr old thought he would be helpful and give the little one her medicine so somehow climbed up the pantry and undid the lid, poured a cup full for both of them and then refilled the babies when she finished it. The mother noticed he had pink stuff on his face and realised what it was. He was fine but the baby had to go to hospital and was all floppy and out of it. She spent about 3 nights in there and they checked her levels all the time and said that if they didnt come down she could end up with liver failure. Scary aye! Same friends SIL's wee baby almost drown in a teaspoon of gripe water! she flopped forward when they were trying to give it to her and inhaled it. Had to call an ambulance and everything.

yep definately that's why is says no more than 4 does in 24 hours, becuase it is cleared by the liver, and using too much unless medically directed over time can cause liver damage if there is too much for th eliver to be able to handle.. For a drug that is so readily available, paracetamol and pamol can be very dangerous if not used carefully.
Lots of adults try to OD on Paracetamol deliberately, and even if they actually suvive, despite their best attmepts, most of the time their liver is completely and utterly buggered.

wow! i hadnt heard about that either!!! i had always thought pamol was weak and safe will make me think twice before giving the girls pamol quickly.

It is ok to give for a good reason - Ie, a high temp can do much more damage if left.. give it, if they are sore and unsettled because of sickness with sore throat sore tummy sore ear sore head whatever, give it. but to make em sleep cos it's a sure fire cure.. no way. lol (seriously know some people do this, not you ladies..)

I have heard of so many cases of kids being overdosed and literally at deaths door because of it.
I have also seen what "Stopayne" (it is a paracetemol based medicine in SA) did to my sister. So I am really extremely careful about medicine. I am the only one that administer it so hubby and me cant accidently both dose her for something.
I also stick with the lowest amounts and dont give more than 4 dosis in 24 hour period.

guilty.
Ella has been through several bottles of pamol over her lifetime, we had so many teething issues that she just wouldn't settle without using it.. Oh crap, now I feel like I've damaged my little girl

Zaara is allowed 7ml but I always give her 5ml, and only when she needs it and never more than 4....actually I have never given her 4 in a day! max was 3 doses of 5ml.
I havent heard that you could over dose on it (So thanks for that) but I am always careful re meds.
Gosh it is scary huh??

Just FYI - you need to give them the right dose for their weight, otherwise it's pointless giving it at all. My doctor told me this last time I was there as I made a comment about not giving Joshua as much as it said on the bottle.

Really Clare? My doc told me the you can give upto 7mls to Zaara and I told him that I only give her 5ml and he said does that work for her? I said yes...and he said its fine then!!
