Hey cloth mums
Currently investigating childcare options for our little girl who has been in cloth nappies from birth. I've been really surprised at the number of at-home childcarers that have said they won't take a baby that doesn't use disposables.
Is this common? What's been your experience? Am I going to have a fight on my hands keeping her out of disposables once we get in to the daycare/kindy etc stage?

Lots of daycares take them, but you may have to shop around to find one that does. Ours takes them so it hasn't been an issue at all for us, and fortunately it's an amazing centre.

If you have a centre that doesn't allow it that you much prefer over any that do allow cloth, I'd take some of your nappies in, perhaps with a wetbag as well, and actually show them what you mean by cloth nappies (they may well be imagining white flats).

Ours usually get the poo scraped into the loo, then rolled up and snapped shut so they are just a clean outer with the poos/wees all secure inside. Then into a wetbag and we take them home each day. Sometimes they are busy or the poo is a really sticky one so they just roll the nappy up with poo still on it and we deal with it at home. It's really not a big deal, so sometimes you just have to show them that

Good luck

My DD is in cloth at preschool - surprisingly she's the only one there!

I just make sure i pop in flushable linersfor daycare so the poo side is easy and give them a wetbag, and just tell them to pop the liner/poop in the toilet, the rest in the bag for me to deal with. No dramas.

I just had an honest talk to them, and when they realised it was no more work for them, they were fine

Our daycare in Dunedin (ABC) was awesome with the cloth nappies - they loved our colourful itti bittis. There were a few of us using cloth and we just each used to provide them with a labelled dry pail to put soiled nappies in (They didn't used to scrape poo off but that was fine with me - I didn't expect them to and just did it when I got home, the nappies were no worse for it). Luckily there were kids in cloth before Jude went though - so I didn't have to plead my case, someone else had already done that for me

I imagine it may have been a bit harder if many more kids were in cloth - that would have been quite a few individual pails! Instead of just one bin to chuck the sposies in. Lol.

Our in-home carer was fine with using our cloth nappies - I just had a wetbag there with clean nappies, including disposable liners already put in, and another wetbag for the dirty ones. She would just plop out the contents of the nappy if required and stright into wetbag.

She did find it easier to use disposables when she went out with the kiddies, which was fine by me! I did take some time to show her how easy they were to use, and didn't pressure her to start with - but I had asked when I interviewed her whether she would be willing to use them

Maybe it depends where you live? All the in-home carers I interviewed (close to home) said they were fine with cloth..... but a couple daycares I went to (outside of hippy west auckland ) were horrified at the idea!

hey, thanks.
I think you're right - on further discussion, most I've spoken to have assumed that when I say we don't use disposables, we're talking about flat nappies, safety pins, covers, leaks, mess, etc etc.
I obviously need to explain to these agencies what I actually mean by cloth nappies - they are the ones who are vetting the potential carers, so I don't get a chance to speak to the ones that just say no to explain.
Spoke to another cloth nappy mum today and she said that her boy is the only baby in the daycare centre in cloth nappies, but also that they were happy to use them.
Cloth nappies probably are a less common choice here in this small town that they would be in hippy-ish west auckland, blondy!
