Topic: Helmets for balance bikes? Posted: 26 January 2011 at 9:34pm |
I'm thinking of getting a wooden balance bike for my son's upcoming 2nd birthday. I'm wondering if he'll need a helmet as well - all the pics I've seen of kids modelling the balance bikes don't have helmets. Will he need one? If so, where would I get tiny helmets from?

Good Question. I got a balance bike for DS off 1-day but I'm thinking about a helmet too.
We saw a kid on one a while back and he was motoring!!! Going so quickly and he didn't have one on. DH and I looked at each other and thought that was strange considering his speed.

I saw a toddler helmet at kmart today. Only one ,and it had no price sticker lol. But I'm pretty sure that toyworld, warehouse etc all sell children's helmets.
We are going to get one for ds too, I don't envisage allowing him to take off down the road at great speed (because I'll never get him back, he's a runner! lol) but he tried a friend's helmet on and loved it so I thought it's a good habit to get into regardless.

When we get back to the UK in a few weeks DS will get his main Xmas present which is a balance bike and yep definitely getting him a helmet. I'm guessing a bike shop is the place to go to get them for kids. After seeing the damage he did crashing into a coffee table recently there is no way I'd risk his noggin coming off his bike at speed. Plus there is nothing wrong with teaching them good bike / road safety right from the get go.

people think I'm weird because now Ethan has a real bike(i.e. we go down the footpath and for walks on it) he is ALWAYS required to wear his helmet.. but i dont get why it's different to any other bike..esp as they are so little and just learning..so yeah i would get them one..he got his from kmart..

Cool, thanks for the advice. I did wonder why they should be any different to normal bikes. The only flat area we have around our house is on concrete as well.
Will go look for wee kid's helmets next time I'm in Wanganui, thanks!

yep S has a balance bike and has a helmet, good cos he likes to try it out at the bmx park oh the bike not the helmet, but probably only a matter of time till the helmet does get tested as well!
Loads of places sell the hats, we got a Thomas one and it was about $20 from the warehouse, but have seen them at toyworld and kmart as well and I think most if not all bike shops would stock them too.

yeah we got one from the bike shop when we got the seat to go on my bike (shes not quite up to a balance bike lol) ours was more expensive as from a proper bike shop and it was the smallest size. 45cm-50 (i think) I know it only just fits on smallest setting, so plenty of room to grow lol.

Yep both mine wear helmets on balance bike and scooter. Sophie is a total demon on her bike and if she crashed without a helmet ir would be nasty.
Our house rule is no helmet no bike/scooter

All decent bike shops will stock kids helmets too. Our rule is the same as Jaycee's - no helmet no bike / scooter.

Mine wear helmets on theirs. I insist on it...its a bike....therefore it needs a helmet. Now they wont ride without it...even on the back lawn
warehouse has helmets if yo have one near by....or they have them online too.

We got our boy a helmet from Pop Pop Soda Pop
a little nutty helmet. They are super cool!!!!! And have an adjustable strap so should last he's about 4-5years old. They are more expensive than standard helmets. They ship nz wide, so check them out on face book if your interested.
