Topic: Belly Crawling Posted: 02 February 2011 at 9:53am |
Hi there
Well my wee Zoe belly crawls and has been for quite a while. She gets up on all fours and rocks away but then just flops back onto her belly and away she goes. Just wondering if she will ever crawl normally and roughly how long it might be before she does.............I know each baby is different but would just like to hear about other fellow belly crawlers

My K did the commando/belly crawling for a good couple of months, towards the 2nd month she finally started figuring out that you could use legs too! She graduated to the caterpillar, hands up push forward, bottom up push forward.... And then just got up and started crawling, slow at first and then super quick.
It may take another month or just a few days, its hard to tell, but should be sooner rather than later with what she is doing with the up and rocking.

My DD took about a week. Like Kali says, it varies hugely but the fact that shes up on her knees rocking away indicates she should be off soon.
Once shes off, watch out - they get very speedy, very quickly!!

Both my two have been belly crawlers. They seem determined to stick to their guns and crawl like that no matter what - I remember Jimmy scratching his tummy because he was determined to cross our garden, which was covered in bark . Hubby and I were trying to recall whether he ended up doing 'normal' crawling before or after learning to walk, and we think he did it later, after walking. Leah looks set to go the same way - she is 10 months now and although she gets up and rocks a lot she never ever tries to move forwards or backwards. She just wants to go upwards!
Leah's crawl cracks me up - she still only uses her left foot for pushing and her right elbow for moving, so it looks like she's belly crawling with a limp! Jimmy did the full on commando-crawl, like the army guys. How does Zoe crawl?

7 months is still very young! Niether of my kids have moved at all at that age, when other kids are fully crawling!
Aiden started dragging himslef along on his tummy, just using his arms with his legs dragging behind, at about 8 months, and crawled normally at 11 months- I think cos he had already found a good way to get around, he was i no hurry to crawl in the usual way!

Both my boys cammando crawled from 5.5 months. The oldest one eventually crawled on all fours at 10.5 months but it was only for 2 weeks and them he started walking. The younger one never crawled on all fours. He started walking at 10.5 months.

My girl has been doing the belly crawl or the 'seal', she has now graduated to actual crawling with some 'frog' movements thrown in!

Yeah Zoe looks like a seal haha. Uses both arms to pull her legs behind her. Occasionally one foot gets used to push off. Quite quick when she gets going especially on the lino

My DD "slithered" for about 4-5 weeks then one day just started properly crawling with almost no lead up. I had thought she was going to bypass it and just walk since she was pulling herself up on furniture before she crawled properly. But my, if you think they go fast on their tummies, wait until they're on all 4's! Some days I feel like putting a bell on my girl so I can keep track of her.

Eldest was from 8 months till 13 when he finally crawled on all fours, was a huge celebration in our house that day, we didn't think he would ever do it!
Youngest was commando crawling around 6 months and proper crawling from about 7-8 months.

DS commando crawled at 6months for a month then started crawling normally but would flop down and commando to get to where he wanted faster for another week or so then he just started crawling and on the same day he started pulling up on furniture. So by 7.5 months he was crawling properly. And FAST.

DS commando crawled for about 2 months - he was like a wounded solider - one arm tucked under dragging himself along He finally got up on all fours and now crawls around 90 miles an hour. He's not walking yet on his own.

DS1 belly crawled from around 7months to 11 months, then within a few days he changed to crawling properly and within a month or so walked...
They all seem to change over, make sure you get some videos of her belly crawling, it's hard to remember what they were like as soon as they stop!!

DD has only just started proper crawling last week, she commando crawled from 9.5 months til 10.5.
I thought it was a devlopmently good for babies to commando crawl first.

I think Hunter commando crawled for a good 2-3 months, and then at 9 month within the space of a week crawled 'properly', stood, climbed stairs and walked holding onto things!

W does this for a wee while. I think it was only a couple of weeks but then he was up and crawling. The whole time he was going up on knees rocking, then down on tummy to move.
Now he can move SUPER fast and after only about 3 days proper crawling could go from crawling to sitting by himself They change so quickly!!

Porti is still rolling around the house or just swivelling on her belly, no backward or forward movement
Milla belly crawled for a while, then about a month of crawling at 8 months, then bear walking - on hands and feet on the floor for ages - took her first step on her 13 month birthday - a year to the day of her first surgery!!
