Hi everyone, just wondering if anybody has had a child that has been diagnosed with pre-mature puberty? My DD is 21 months old and is half way through tests to see if she is already going through puberty. (can you beleive!) We noticed one of her breasts was quite large which was what we took her in for firstly. I was expecting to be told not to be so silly, that it was just baby fat, but it seems that maybe it's more than that.
Anyhow, am trying not to get worked up over what probably is nothing, but if there is anyone else out there who has gone/going through this I would love to chat....

Hi there, first of all oh my goodness, how scary it must be, I have no idea how iam going to explain things when the time comes and my girls are old enough, but wow, how would you even begin to explain at this age and as they grow up? Here's hoping the tests come back all clear and she really is just getting a bit more bubba fat.

I have read of this once before a long long time ago.

good luck and will keep fingers crossed for you and your beautiful babe.

hey thanks for your kind words Janine, it is pretty scary, but then I tell myself to get over it, my baby is alive and well and other than having to deal with raging hormones for years and years instead of only a few there are a lot of worse things out there that she could have.
I have just read that up to 15% of toddlers develop breast tissue for no apparent reason so I am doing some research on the web to try and find out more.
Anyway, thanks again for your thoughts

I have never heard of toddlers going thru puberty, but my DSD went thru what they call "precocious puberty" - had breasts at 6 and got her period at 8. It was so cruel for her - how do you explain puberty, hygiene etc. to an 8 year old (and a fairly immature one at that)? They ended up putting her on the Pill at 9 to regulate her cycles coz she had huge trouble with long/heavy cycles.

I'll have my fingers tightly crossed that your wee girl just has chubby bubby boobies and nothing more serious.

Emma your poor DSD, and poor you guys too. It's bad enough that childhood is so short with the way the world is now without having to shorten it even more so with puberty so early. I still can't believe that she got her period at 8, that is just awful, I remember getting mine at 12 and thinking that it was the worse thing to happen to me because nobody else in primary school had theirs yet. But then at least you can sort of hide having your period, no hiding budding breasts is there...I hope she got through it all without too much teasing.
we will know more re Cailin in a few weeks hopefully. She is booked in for a xray to check the density of the bones, apparently that has something to do with puberty.
Sadly though, her breast is still getting bigger and the other one is now forming a bud too which it didn't have a few weeks ago. I will be glad when we know either way.

Gosh I didn't get my period until 14 1/2, by that stage all my cousins, even 2 years younger than me, had theirs and I was starting to have an identity crises! I felt so relieved to get it... how weird is that!

I didn't get mine till a month before i turned 16. I was seriously starting to think there was something seriously wrong.. mum had me booked to go see the doctor after my 16th birthday if it hadn't turned up. Why did i long for it so much.. darn stupid thing.. i hate it!

hey thanks for thinking of us still!
She had an xray last week to check for bone density and we were told that we would get a follow up appointment within 2 months so just waiting.
She is great though, happy (or screaming blue murder) and hypo like all almost twos are.
How old is your DSD now, did putting her on the pill so early on help sort her poor little hormones & body out?

I hope you get an appointment sooner rather than later - all that worry can't be good for you (but then that's what us Mums do I guess).

DSD is 14 now, she has been off the pill since she was 12 and hasn't had any major issues. I think a lot of it was that she is quite immature for her age so emotionally couldn't cope and being so young trying to teach her the practical stuff like how often to change, what to do with her dirty knickers etc. was tricky coz she was embarassed. It's so cruel - kids so young shouldn't have to deal with that sort of stuff!

I will have my fingers crossed for your wee girl!

well the very very good news is that the first lot of tests have come back and it's all good. They did an xray to check that Cailin's bone density isn't excellerated and it has come back delayed if anything. Which to the best of our knowledge is not an issue at all. We haven't heard back from the blood tests so guessing no news is good news.
We have a follow up appointment in a few months but looks all good

Well that is good news and I bet you must be so relieved. So how's her initial symptoms that sent you to the Doc in the first place?

Busymum, she still has breast buds that I think have got even more pronounced since we saw the doctor, but then that could be a paranoid mother too! I have been doing heaps of reading on the internet and have found a condition called Premature Thelarche which I think sounds like what Cailin has since (thank goodness) it looks like its not pre-mature puberty. Premature Thelarche is not a major deal at all and there has never been any reported side effects of it and only about 6% of girls will progress to pre-mature puberty. I think they just need check ups each year or so just to make sure nothing else is going on.

Oh and NZpiper, quite happy for bubs to stay in there for a while longer yet so might just keep my legs crossed too

we had our follow up appointment on Monday and the doctor was happy with the results and didn't think that Cailins breast have got any bigger so that is great. She has grown quite quickly over the past few months and moved up from the 25% line to 50% line. No major drama, but we just have to keep an eye on her growth and if she keeps growing fast (like gets up to the 75% mark over the next 6 months or so) we have to go straight back to Docs.
But other than that, it was all great and we don't need to go back for a year.
The appointment was on Cailin's 2nd birthday so that was a great bday present for all of us
