Topic: Childcare in Wellington Central     Posted: 17 March 2011 at 11:23pm |

   Hi there,

We're expecting our first baby in September and, barring a miracle or a Lotto win, I'm going to need to go back to work around April 2012.

I've heard that getting a baby into childcare in Wellington is a nightmare - especially part time - which is what we'd want to do at least initially (Mon-Wed) and that I need to get on a waiting list asap to have a chance of something this time next year.

Does anyone have any experience with childcare in the central city? I'm up the Terrace/Lambton Quay end and would like it to be around there if at all possible so I can pop in during lunchtimes.

 Thanks :)

I had my girls in WCCCA which is just for over 1s and don't have a waiting list.

For most centres, the waiting lists are long so I would put them on lists NOW.

I don't have any suggestions of CBD centres but I've heard great things about Capital Kids Co-op in Newtown.

There is a daycare centre near my work called Playhouse Childcare. It's on Ballantrae Place so quite close to the Terrace. I know they take Parliamentary staff members' kids first, and then members of the wider community, so you might want to ring and check to see what their waiting list is like (probably long, but it couldn't hurt to put your name down).

Yep, definately get on waiting lists now, and then visit the centres and ring them regularly to let then know you are serious. They don't take kids on who has been on the list longest, but the pushiest parents.

My kids are starting at Hill St soon.

There is a centre in the reserve bank building on the parliament end of the Tce (kids reserve) - they take DOL and Reserve bank kids first - that's the only one I know of on the Tce. Good luck!!

There is also ABCD childcare on harris street. Sorry I don't have any experience with them, but I found them when I was considering daycare and I work on the terrace.

I ended up with a home carer.

Thanks everyone. I've put baby on waiting list for Playhouse and will try Kids Reserve as well :)
