I have a thrush infection in my nipples. My baby and I have both been treated for a week now (Daktarin cream for me, and Nilstat solution for her), but the pain in my nipples/breast is not improving. It can be excrutiating at times, feeling like someone is stabbing hot/electric wires into my breasts.

I saw my doc this morning, and she has arranged a referral to a lactation consultant since the pain hadn't improved (in case it is a latch issue), but didn't suggest any further treatment. I'm seeing my MW on Monday.

My question is, has anyone else been here, and if so, what helped - medication or alternative treatments - what should I be pushing for?

I forgot to say, my baby does have an issue latching on my left breast, but that is not what is causing the excrutiating pain, especially the pain between feedings...

your mw might have a better idea of what to use. if one of the treatments isnt working then you will just keep reinfecting each other.

Have you given all your bras and breast pads etc a really good wash?
I haven't personally had thrush, but one of the girls in my DD thread had recurrent problems nd discovered it was from her bras.
Otherwise as Bizzy said, speaking to your mw or a LLL leader might help.

I've had it...totally feel your pain! It's the most excrutiating thing ever!

As MamaT said, washing - make sure you use a Canesten rinse for every wash for about a week after the symptoms disappear just to make sure it's totally gone and there's no chance of reinfection.

There are alternative antifungals you can use, Micreme-H, I think is one. I used Canesten because according to the pharmacist it's supposed to be gentler on your nipples but it needs to be wiped off before feeding.

My midwife ended up putting me on antibiotics, which seemed like the opposite of the right thing to do and I almost didn't take them, but I was willing to give anything a go...and within 12hrs I was feeling a bit better.
If I remember rightly it took almost 2 weeks for the symptoms to totally disappear, and possibly longer for DS (he had it in his mouth and bum)...there was also the mental side of it and the anxiety about feeding because of the pain.

Did you get IV antibiotics during labour just out of interest? I did and I'm positive that's what caused the thrush. I also got 2 jars of Inner Health Plus probiotics and took them twice daily until they were gone, just to make sure my internal flora was balanced again.

Thanks for the suggestions ladies. I have been washing all my bras daily, but will separate them, soak them and then hot wash ... Just using disposable breast pads, so that's not an issue.

Luckily my baby isn't showing any symptoms of thrush, just being treated as a preventative ...

I got really badly cracked and traumatised nipples in hospital, so I think that's where it set in. There are days when I think it would be easier to give up bfing, but then the next feed is a bit easier, and I keep going ...

Where do you get the canesten rinse - pharmacy?
