Topic: Hey Wellingtonians! Posted: 15 April 2007 at 4:16pm |
For the sake of my mental health, Nathaniel's teaching future and our relationship we have decided we need to move somewhere bigger than Ohakune! For a variety of reasons, we've decided not to move before the end of the school year but it looks like it will be all on by Christmas!
We are both "city" people and (even though we can't explain it ourselves) we are both individually drawn to Wellington, so that is currently top of the list of places to go (job dependant, of course).
So tell me all about your city, people! I can find the average rent easily enough... but I'm interested in the things only locals know: what are the good primary schools and kindys? Do you pay for water (as a tenant)? Where are the best parks/playgrounds? Etc etc... we are looking mostly at north of Wellington City, so from Lower Hutt out as far as Upper Hutt and Newlands/Johnsonville out to Porirua.

Oh and we are leaving Wellington in August stink!!
But we live in Stokes Valley in Lower Hutt, it small but is good for me cause I dont drive and its not hard to bus (plus it cheap rent hehe).
I love Lower Hutt, we got our rental now through trade me property, the one before through the Hutt News, and there is def not a shortage in rentals in the area, jsut depending on what part and how much your wantiong to pay.
I have never had to pay for water as a tenant in any of the places I ahve lived in here, so Im pretty sure thats a no.
We ahve only lived ehre for jsut over a year so Im sure the longer stayers of the area should ebable to fill oyu in better on kindys/ schools.

We're renters, and we don't pay for water Maybe it's factored into our rent, I'm not sure.
Avalon Park in Lower Hutt is a pretty neat park (although a whole bunch of ducks have just been poisoned so we're avoiding it for a week or so). It's got a huge pond, a really neat playground for bigger kids and a really neat playground for the smaller ones too! It even has a ride on train that is open most school holidays and I think you just pay a small fee for a ride around. At the pond end, it also has bbq areas (not sure on the quality of the bbqs though).
Harcourt Park in Upper Hutt is great too (although a bit far out for us so we don't often go).
Can't fill you in much on the school side of things, although I hear raves about Kelson School - good raves.
Enjoy doing your research!

We live in the city, and we haven't had to think of schools yet so I'm unsure. If I remember correctly, you are both Christian, is that right? There are a few good Christian primary schools in Lower Hutt, I can find out the names for you - has been a while and I'm out of touch!
There are heaps of parks everywhere, I know of 7 or more great parks near me.. but there are quite a few in Lower Hutt too, Upper Hutt has another good park although can't remember the name, it's not far from the swimming pool.
J-ville is a great family place to live, lots of shops and kindergartens there.
Not too sure about Newlands but I think the rent is reasonable there.

Yes we are, so that would be great! No hurry though - we're just as happy for Kiya to attend a secular (ie: not specifically Christian) school.
