Topic: Adoption? Posted: 17 April 2007 at 10:55am |
Hiya,
Just a quick intro about myself. I'm Leah, my DH and I are adopting a baby girl from china. We are adopting becouse When I was 22 i was diagnosed with Cervical cancer. We have tried twice through IVF but failed both times. We started looking into adoption nearlly 5 years ago.
I was wondering if there are any other parents who have adopted?

Not that I know of, but I have friends who have adopted from Russia. Their kids are all older now, primary school age.
Is that your wee girl in the ticker?

welcome - she is beautiful. I know i got a text from mum when she was in china wanting to bring home a bubba....i know she was heartbroken to leave some of the bubs behind that she saw. Ive had friends adopt from russia and romania years ago and My aunty in america is involved in adoptions from india.
My cousin was 6 months old when she came to usa from india and had a multitude of medical problems (esp dislocated hips being put in casts for 18 months) from living in the cots in the orphanage to start with that would have been easily fixed at birth but whihc eventually came right. I would suggest you be prepared for that.
My aunty also made sure my cousin was involved with indian organisations but then the stigma of adotive children can be difficult in those cutures so she stayed tight with other families who adopted from india also. I met some of the other kids and their families and they were awesome kids. You need to be careful as the stigma from others in her culture of her being an orphan reaches deeper than you would expect, and may not be noticeable but may be there nonetheless
I dont know what area you live in but if in auckland once she arrives you may want to become involved with activities for her through the buddhist temple in botany, or similar, who welcome all and would preserve culture and language for her.

Wow she is gorgeous and I bet you can't wait till you get her home. I understand its a long process but how come its going to take 6 months to get her home? (niave that I am)
I am interested in finding out more too;. I often thought of adopting not cause I can't have babies but because there is so many out there in this world that needs a home just like ours. Well done.
My friend also might have to look into adoption if IVF doesn't work for her, which is quite likely so prehaps when the time comes for them they maybe able to pick your brains.

She's gorgeous! Sorry I don't know much about adoption either but my Doctor and his wife couldn't have any children so they have adopted (NZ) and now have 8 or 9 kids! The oldest is 14 I think. Go them!

What a fantastic outcome to five long years of waiting!
We have friends who adopted from Russia. They brought home three wee babes who are now between the ages of fourteen and eighteen!

what a sweetheart! that clears up a question I was planning to ask - got a bit confused cause thought you were pergnant, but had a baby pic already....anyway, just me being confused.
I know a few people who were adopted. a friend from America was adopted from Korea when she was a baby. My hubby's ex recently adopted a russian orphan and my cousins have whangai'ed two/three kids. not sure about the logistics though.

Welcome Leah to Oh Baby. How exciting for us here that you will be counting down to her arrival into your family with us!
I don't know much about adoption personally, but my mum is team leader for Adoption Services in Wellington, so I plan to be asking her LOTS of questions soon. I've been lucky enough to have my own baby, but I have wanted for quite some time to look into fostering. There are so many little ones on our own back doorstep who desperately need love and affection and someone who they know really cares for them - it breaks my heart.
I look forward to following your progress as the day you have wee Mia Grace gets closer!!
