Topic: sensitive skin Posted: 27 May 2011 at 4:18pm |
DD seems to have very sensitive skin - she gets dry skin in her creases I do my best to keep her clean and dry.
Is there anything else I can do to help her? Her leg creases were quite red today and seemed to be hurting her.
I've been using Little Genie wipes and wondering if they're aggravating her.
I've noticed little pimplely red spots on her bum and sometimes on her face.
Is this from allergies?

Try lathering her in aqueous cream, it could just be the change in weather affecting her skin.
I leave DS with no nappy for ages, and just try to catch any wees or soak them up with an old flat nappy, baby wees aren't a major.

She likes having her nappy off I'll give her more time without it tomorrow.
I'll try the cream she's been like this since newborn think she inherited her father's skin.

C&J, are you using the scented or unscented wipes? I find the scented one gives me headaches and makes ds skin red so I don't use little genie wipes at all and use silk unscented wipes which neither of us have a problem with. I also use aveeno moisturiser on the rest of his skin when it looks dry and aqueous cream when if he gets nappy rash and at night since he's normally in a nappy for 12 hrs.

DD has very dry skin all over. We are currently lathering her twice daily in aqueous cream, using a tiny amount of cetaphil to clean her (rather than soap) and using softway wipes (which seem to affect her less than any supermarket brand that I've tried). It's still dry as anything though! If you do happen across any magical solution, I'm all ears ..

Little genie wipes are terrible for sensitive skin. I only ever use home made cloth wipes, wet with water only, when at home, and then I use unscented wipes when out.
Also, we never use any soaps or bubble baths when bathing him. water is all you really need.
Aqueous cream is great, use it heaps. Get it on prescription and it is free.
I give my 6 month old HEAPS of nappy off time. I put him on a large padded playmat which absorbs most of the pee, and it doesn't go through to the carpet, and then I just wash the mat every day or so.

Ditto ditching the wipes!
Get aqueos cream use it in the bath as well if you want to wash her with anything. I never used anything bar water on my kids skin until they actually start getting dirty.

Yep, I agree with the above posts,
Get rid of the wipes, face cloths and water work great.
No soap in the bath (and even on the occasion I wash DDs hair I wash it at the very last minute so shes not sitting in the shampoo)
If the aqueous cream doesnt quite do the trick get some emulsifying ointment, that stuff is the best moisturiser you can get, and you can use it as a soap substitute too (its thick tho (so a good barrier for the skin) so you need to rub it in your hands to warm it up )
At about 6/7m old I started to put DD on the potty when I took her nappy off (emptying her bladder) and then letting her roam around with out a nappy on. If you put her on the potty every 1/2 hour -1 hour you should ahve minimal accidents. Otherwise just put an old flat under her bum (is she crawling yet?) to catch any pees

I've only ever bathed her with water we use a tummy tub and she regularly tries to drink the stuff so no soap of any kind for her.
I'll ditch the wipes and grab some more cloth ones that's all I used when she was little and seem to do the trick.
I was using cotton wool and water for wees and saving wipes/cloths for #2s.
She's not quite crawling yet but she does move and almost always pees when she's on her front.
When you give your babies nappy off time what do you have on their top half?

At the moment nappy off time he usually has a woollen singlet (long sleeved) with a t-shirt over top & gumboots lol Funky look, but they same would go I guess for Catherine.

I often put pants but no nappies on when DD needs nappy free time. That way the poos get caught in the pants and if they are track pants or similar, they often soak up most of the wees before it hits the floor too.
We use wet cloths for wipes here too. No way can we use anything else. I usually manage to find somewhere to wet them when out too or if I know I won't, then I pack some wet ones into a little plastic bag before I go.
I use beeswax/honey based products or similar and they seem to do the trick. What sorts of creams work well for your DH?

Hehe, thought you might say that
If he has similar skin though, you could always insist that he has to spot test anything new you want to put on DD. DD gets her grotty skin from me, so I tend to try things out on myself first to weed out the really bad choices.

The girls don't have sensitive skin as such (although Jade is prone to getting excema), and still got aggravated by Little Genie wipes. We only use Silk unscented wipes now, and no problems at all (plus they're fairly cheap, which is also a bonus).
As for nappy off time, we just used to put a cloth nappy underneath them which caught anything (never had a #2 accident thank god!!) and changed it/folded it over if they had one.

hehe nappy off time we have a waterproof mat under E with a flat nappy on it and just change that nappy when she wees - usually straight after i take her old nappy away hehe grrr!
We use plain wipes that they used in the neonatal unit, you can get them brand new off trade me, called patient wipes, you just put them in water. we tried using baby wipes but they made her nappy rash all the time so just use plain water n these wipe things (plain cloth sort of things) are real good and quite cheap.
Interesting alot of ppl saying on here they just bathe in plain water, going to start using less suds now for E as well, apart from when done a mega poo like tonite hehe. seems bathing her everyday with suds the using a moisturiser has made her skin more dry too, weird huh?
When E's creases get abit red i just use plain Vit E cream.

DD has dry skin in her armpits! I use weleda cream on her bum. Try to keep her neck clean and dry and tend to only use water that can be drying by itself.
She doesn't usually have #2 accident when nappy off, she does pee whenever she's on her tummy. Flat cloth nappies are doing the job.
