Topic: Puree Feeding Posted: 10 June 2011 at 12:47pm |
So despite best intentions to wait til 6 months + and do BLW seems DS is ready NOW so at the grand old age of 4m1w i offered some purees. Plunket Karitane said he'd take maybe half a teaspoon and would build up to having more but he must have had 3 tablespoons PLUS - and i wasnt forcing it. He was open mouthed lunging for spoon and spat almost none out - he only got grubby because i let him hold the spoon!
He's just settled for a sleep for the first time in over a week without screaming and has sleep for longer then half an hour for the first time in over a fortnight - HOORAH!
Anyway, because i was heartset on BLW i have oodles of knowledge about that but none regarding purees - so help? I did a google but there is SO much info out there i got a bit lost and i don't wish to call plunketline as i've already had a barney with them today (shame!)
So you give one flavour for a few days then try a new flavour repeat? Does that mean you're offering two flavours after a few days or do you just switch to a new one?
I was told only give vege as they'll learn to prefer fruit tastes is that true? He started on pear and will have some vege next time around but should i be aware of this fruit preference?
How long does he stay on the stage 1 jars for?
ETA: I have heard (and believe) that solids make no difference to sleeping so perhaps its all a coincidence...but a happy, timely coincidence!

At 4 months I would start with pears, not veges, Id wait a bit for the veges as he is still so little(some veges can really upset their tummys).
My DS started on pears at 4 months, I mixed a teeny bit of baby rice into it to bulk it up a bit and he only had a few teaspoons worth once a day, their tummys are tiny still.
When he was 6 months I started him on some vege at dinner time and the fruit/cereals at breakfast.

You can still do BLW.
i used to stick with one flavour for a week at least though... remember their taste buds arent the same as ours.

Oh yes, I started with kumera - Jacob was closer to six months, but he didn't go for weeks
I think the general rule is take things slowly in case he has a reaction to anything. Once you've proved he's fine with it, try a new one. But if you were keen on BLW, where I think they pretty much start with whatever, then the principal is still the same, you don't HAVE to do it one thing at a time or anything.
Jacob lived on pears for a while (they're good for constipation) and he's taken to veges just fine. I actually started him on things like silverbeet by mixing them with pears so he got used to the taste first.

We did. I wasn't too keen on BLW full-time, so technically, according to the book we didn't really do BLW at all, we just fed him a mixture of purees and finger-foods. It worked out he had about half of each, and that worked great for us. If you're keen on going the whole hog with BLW, you could just swap over at six months - but I do wonder if a hungry little (big!) boy like Max would miss the solids he'd been getting through puree, since they don't tend to get all that much down them when they first start BLW? I guess you could give it a shot and if he's crying with hunger do a mixture of both?

We do both I started DD on solids at 5 1/2 months cause she was ready for them.
I started with pumpkin as recommended by a naturopath as its sweet and no allergies etc.
One thing I was told to avoid was baby rice as its not very nutritious and causes lots of tummy upsets.
DD has never had it.
I did single fruit and vege for a couple of days. Once I knew she was ok with one I'd offer a different one and then together.
I also combined ones I knew were binding - kumara, apple and banana
with ones that are less so - pumpkin, pear and carrot
I stuck with those core 5 fruits and vege till she was 6 months then we went for it and tried everything.
DD does prefer fruit and sweet vege - she doesn't like broccoli or peas.

Apart from no added sugar, salt, honey or milk as a drink in the first year and nuts till they are 5.
There aren't any other 'rules' when it comes to solids - let your baby guide you with what he likes and doesn't like.
Food is fun till they're 1 - there are bigger food battles to come when they're toddlers.

Thanks Caliandjack. I'm certainly not interested in fighting him! I was wondering about the different flavours and when to combine them so thanks for that. I think we'll be sticking with apple pear banana carrot and pumpkin as our 'flavours' for now anyway. And no intention of the whole Farex thing, it tastes nasty .

I did a mixture.
T was ready for solids at 4.5ish months and I started him on pear I think. I kept his 'meals' small and let him sorta guide when he was ready for more. At 6 months I started introducing finger food and he took to it like a duck in water but still liked his routine mashy dinner. At around 8 months he decided he was too cool for mash and wanted finger food only so we went with that. He completely skipped the chunky mash stage cos he hated it. Then at like 11 months he started letting me feed him again so we mix fed again, but it was different obviously. I fed him breakfast only usualy. Even now, at 14 months he likes me to feed him his weetbix. He can eat with a spoon himself and quite happily feeds himself every other meal.
The way I see it, we still did BLW. Cos to me, we couldn't have got much more baby led if we tried..

We started solids - puree fruits at 4.5 months.
We skiped farex didn't give it to her at all.
We started BLW at about 5.5 months - Some times she'll feed her self one of the only organic pocket things. But other then that she has what we have. I know when shes eaten enoguh because she starts throwing the rest over her high chair haha!! I love her joining us for a roast pork!
I didn't make my own purees (naughty I know) apart from apples! but the tinned stuff was so much easier for me when I was working etc. And at the start one little tin/jar lasted 2-3 meals!
