Hey Guys - I know there is an allergy section but thought this might be more well read in here..

Our wee girl has had to start going on formula as I am back at work part-time so she is only getting approx 5 bottles/week. I have had her on S26 Gold infant and the day after she has a bottle she gets grumpy, very gassy (both ends) and has just started with a wee bit of eczema behind her knees.

So I went to the GP and he was useless - said she probably had some kinda dairy sensitivity and recommended Neocate which is SERIOUSLY expensive at $80 for 400g!! And I personally dont think she has a serous enough reaction to it to warrant this level of hydrolysed product..

So in a long-winded way I guess I am asking if anyone else has had this experience? I am thinking of trying a goat-based formula - anyone have anything to add about that?

Thanks in advance!!

I always found any formula with GOLD in the title caused my kids awful tummy pain etc. They say its best and as close to breast milk as possible but I don't buy it.

So I had my kids on the plain S26 with no issues at all I would give that a go and see how she is, as it really sounds like that GOLD formula doesn't agree with her wee tummy.

Yeh thats a bit off isnt it? I know you can get neocate subsidised if she does need it, so i'd be hitting your doc up for a script if she's right. I don't know a thing about formula but i know you can get sample packs (one or two bottles) which might be a good option if you have to trial a few?

You have to go through a paed for the initial script for Neocate.

You could try Goat, although it could still be the same as the proteins are very similar. I think if the formula has brought on ezcema I would try Goat & then you can could try one of the other special formula's in the supermarket, the HA brand is one. Here is a blurb on it from the Huggies site

Partially hydrolysed formula (H.A.)

As we know, most infant formula is either modified cows’ milk-based, and – not being ‘native’ to the infant’s digestive system like breastmilk – the proteins can be treated as ‘foreign’ bodies. Partially hydrolysed infant formulas, denoted on tins as H.A., contain protein that is broken up so that the complex protein molecules are easier to process and are less likely to be a threat to the baby’s defences.

HA formulas are often recommended for babies who experience colic or reflex. HA formulas don’t form curds in the stomach like casein-based formula may, and it appears HA formula is digested in a similar fashion to breastmilk and hence ‘sits’ better with babies. Some infant formula companies are applying to lower the protein content of their infant formula closer to breastmilk; to date only one HA-type infant formula has such approval. Research on this type of formula appears to suggest that it reduces the amount of metabolic processes required by baby to digest the protein, and that it aids digestion, reduces constipation, allergies, and stress on organs such as the still-developing kidneys.

Hiya,

I'd try one of the normal formula's...I started supplementing at around 5 months old. I had my DS on Karicare Gold which made his tum very upset. I moved him onto the Karicare High Allergy until he was older. Now he is on the plain Karicare and is fine....

In terms of the excema you can try a naturopath who does muscle testing? This is how we got rid of my DS's allergy to dairy, salycilates (sp?) and sugar.

Good luck :)

Thanks for all the great advice!

Apriletta - is that the HA stuff that AandCsmum has mentioned? Just I read on the website that is is "NOT to be used for infants with diagnosed milk allergy. Karicare HA Gold+ is not suitable for general use and should be used under medical supervision"...

So does that mean that the ship has sailed so to speak? Because I have already been giving her normal dairy based stuff that the HA will no longer work?

And as for the second part about not being for general use - the huge bulk of her feed is still BM so she'll be getting everything from that

The eczema is not too bad to be honest - barely noticable but I just dont want it getting any worse for her

Gah I wish she would just drink EBM!! She just wont touch the stuff if it comes in a bottle! Formula is fine, EBM = no thanks mum!

Am pretty sure that the diagnosed milk allergy will mean that they will need neocate which is an amino acid where the protein is taken out of the cows milk. I couldn't give my boy HA as he needs something without the protein & HA still has the protein to a certain extent.

My advice is to actually phone them up, chances are you'll get a free tin to try and they are good for the advice.

Have you tried giving EBM from a teaspoon or normal cup? like a sippy cup??

I think just try a normal plain formula for now and see how she goes as it does sound like that particular formula didnt agree with her wee tummy.
If she is still not good after a normal formula then it *could* be a dairy thing.

Do you have dairy in your diet? Im pretty sure if it was an intolerance to dairy and she is breastfed the symptoms would have shown before you started formula...which is why i think its just the GOLD formula doing it.

if you have a search on here you will find quite a few threads about babies having tummy probs and stuff from those formulas(i remember looking when my son had the same thing happen)

Thats a bit weird of your doctor to suggest buying neocate when you can get it for free on prescription. As I understand it its very hard to buy it just cos you want to try it as well, when we were trialing neocate and we ran out of tins before our order came in we had to beg the hospital to sell us one they had for another patient and we paid over $100!

I agree with the gold formula thing, try a plain formula such as S26 first. But if you do suspect dairy intolerance I would bypass GP altogether and go straight to the paediatrician, the GP's seem to have no idea about this stuff. I took my son to the GP numerous times with no luck. As soon as we went to the paed he diagnosed cows milk intolerance and put him on neocate which changed our lives. His symptoms were stomach pains, constipation, constant spilling, severe reflux, gas, etc.

Good luck in trying to figure it out. You could also try lactose free formula

my doctor was the same, my 6 month old has a dairy intolerence I give her Karicare Soy formula which is $24.99 at the supermarket which is about the same as 'normal' formula. Caitlyn is such a happy baby now. It took 3 hospital admissions and 8 different doctors to finally work out she had a dairy intolerance, I actually ended up working it out myself and just changed her onto the soy formula.

I bet if you try the standard cheap no nonsense formula she will be fine.

It is the added stuff in Gold that can cause tummy upsets.

the Golds ones are notorious for causing problems try one of the newborn ones we used nurture with great success, karicare made DD very windy.

If in doubt call the formula companies I've found them really helpful.

my 4.5month old twins both have dairy intolerence and soy intolerence and goats milk formula is great for them , when we started it it was like someone had switched our babies, man I had not noticed some of the minor symptoms until we hit a major reaction while holidaying in the UK. Fortunately for us my brother in law is a kinesiologist and so tested both boys and me and since removing dairy they are changed boys. Not a cheap option but better than the alternative. I note there ate lactose free formulas too but not sure if that will help you.

Thanks everyone - we persevered with the S26 gold and she is now going really well on it... Maybe I was just being an over-cautious mummy and reading too much into the signs
