Not sure if there is a thread in this or not but I am in need of advice/help/ideas. I want to start my DS2 taking a bottle of expressed milk/or formula but he just will not take a bottle! I have tried 2 different types of bottles/teats (the breast mimic type ones!!) but he just won't do it. He is now nearly 15 weeks old and I have been trying off and on since he was about 7 weeks. He has taken one or two in that time.
Any ideas please??? Do I just need to keep at it? I will need him to take a bottle in the next few months because I am due to have surgery. If I can't get him to take a bottle at what age can a baby take a cup of milk for their feed?
I had no issues with DS1 - he took milk from anything!!

What about trying him on the boob... and then on the bottle in the same feed? Make sure the bottle teats aren't smelling of steriliser... funny thing... why dont you try having the teat in your bra so it gets your scent and its warm...
When I put my little girl onto the bottle I had my husband feed her, that way she didn't smell my milk or see me and want the boob instead. Means bonding time for baby and Dad and a break for you. I know it will be hard to not be feeding him, go and have a shower or something while its being done so you are entertained. Good luck!

I've been told that babies can smell their mum's milk from over 100m away, so maybe have your partner give the bottle while you go for a walk or drive ...?

My wee one has just gone into daycare and she on and off takes the bottle, the other day she had gone for 6 hours between me feeding her because she refused the bottle! Then the day after she was fine. I have found with her she just will NOT take EBM so unfortunately I have to send her off with formula (I think it is thicker and sweeter so more palatable than our EBM) so is this an option to try?
Also a coffee group friend of mine could never get hers to take a bottle, then her bubba (4mth old) went into daycare and she takes bottles (formula) from them no problems at all, but still when mum tries she is not interested!
Good luck - I know how frustrating this is..

Sharlene Poole (the New Zealand baby whisper) she often does a bit on the Good Morning show on TV1 on Tuesdays. She did a bit about a month ago on how to get a baby to take a bottle - she recommended - distracting them by bouncing them up and down or walking around the house while you try and give them the bottle, she also holds their hands/arms down by grabbing their sleeve - I have to do this every time with my 3month old (she gets one bottle a day in the evening when I am tired) also I find it really has to be at exactly the right temp or she wont take it - if it is too cold she just spits it back out. I have also read the advice to let someone else give the bottle but my baby prefers it from me - I think maybe it is they way I hold her but who knows!
Oh and Sharlene also said to try when they are at their hungriest - which for most babies is the afternoon/2pm ish feed, but you know your baby best.
Hope this all makes sense - I am a very tired mummy but couldn't go past your post without replying.

Agreed, try the 2 pm feed. Also it might be that the flow of the teat is too slow or too fast for her and she gets frustrated. I had to always give my son a faster teat than suggested or he would not be interested. He also liked the formula quite warm and not luke so play around with the temp as well. Formula is not the end of the world so try that for the bottle feeds and give him breast other times. I also agree with having dad give it to him. That is how my son started from the bottle. There is also no reason not to try a softspout sippy cup like the Nuby ones. They are great and soft on their gums. It takes a little getting used to but they get used to it rather quickly. Also check the angle at which you hold him. Put him a little more upright, or try giving him the bottle either where you breastfeed or somewhere else. Sorry I can't help more, only suggesting things I think might be worth trying.
