Is anyone going to the FA Auckland Seminar on Tuesday 01MAY??

It is at 7pm at Ascot Hospital in BB's cafe.

After almost 2 yrs TTC and told by public to go away for 3 years as we are unexplained - I have decided to look down the private path.

Will be interesting to see what they say. Last time they had one they had twice as many people turn up as expected.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know incase you are in Auckland and didnt know about it.

DH and I are going Star. We were on the waiting list from the last one (we phoned to register as soon as it was advertised, and it was already full!) so they phoned us as soon as a date for this one was set.

You can't just turn up though everyone else, you have to register. My guess is that it'll be chocka at this stage with people on a waiting list already. I could be wrong though. If you want the cell number to contact to see if you can get it, I have it on the advert from last time. Just PM me.

I had the impression that anyone could go but now I come to think of it maybe it was limited numbers. Oops sorry everyone.

Thats cool that you are going too.

Yeah, the ad says "to register, or for more information, please call ..." which does give that impression, but last time when I phoned to be polite and register, they said - no sorry, limited numbers, can't fit you in, we'll put you on a list for next time. I suppose that does make sense though when you think about how big BBs is!!

BBs cafe at Ascot? It's tiny! Here was I picturing some giant conference room in the racecourse or something! Still, I spose it could be worse, it could be in the reception area of FA which is even smaller!

It's not very big, considering there are presentations involved etc from what I understand.

The woman I spoke to said that they limit numbers to 60 ...and the room issue I suppose is why they ask you to register!

I just hope we can get coffee as well....

Hehe ...coffee is bad for fertility, so we weren't allowed coffee

What did you think of the seminar Star?

I thought it was good. I did know a reasonable amount of info already from reading and from seeing F+ but it was good to have someone explain everything properly. Plus it was good to get the free book with heaps of info in.

DH thought it was good as he hasn't read up as much as I have and he learnt alot about IVF. The IVF videos were amazing by the way.

Ginger are you going through F+?

Hi Noodle - of course you can butt in

My first appointment was January this year. My doctor suposedly referred to them Apirl06 but we never heard from them so I rang them in July/August and they had never received our referral! at my GP

Anyway, we saw them January 07 and then in February I had a lap and dye (pretty fast). Went back in April for follow up after surgery.

Have you had your first appointment or are you waiting?

I've been dealing with Fertility Associates so far. I went to them because I've heard good things about FA, and not so good things about F+ from 2 friends who have done IVF via the public system. Perhaps justified, perhaps not, but they're the sorts of things that help you make up your mind

The IVF photos were amazing! You're right!

Did you find it weird though, how there seemed to be wuite a few people there who didn't know anything? I nearly threw something at that old guy who had been TTC with his young wife for 6 months! Mind you, I think that the specialist who lead the seminar nearly did too ...especially when they were talking later, and I overheard that they already have a young child together!

We left straight after the talk as my husband does shiftwork and his eyeballs were hanging out

I was thinking the same Ginger. I too could not believe how many people didnt know anything.
That old guy didnt have a clue did he? Gosh how annoying. I just about fell off my chair! 6 mths!

Are you going public with FA then?
F+ are ok. You dont get to see the same doctor each time though which is annoying but hey its free. If we go private it will be for IUI and then save IVF for public - hopefully then we can switch to FA for the IVF part. Fingers crossed we dont get that far

I didnt want to ask any questions so I emailed them yesterday and asked a question and Simon replied which was nice.

We're planning to go private, through FA. Unfortunately, we don't have a treatment choice ...well, we do, but it's probably money down the drain. Our specialist thinks that IVF is the only thing that will increase our chances of getting pregnant. I was really happy to learn though that although the initial cycle cost (fresh cycle) is $8000, frozen cycles are only around $900.

We're going to put ourselves on the public waiting list, but I don't think I'll be able to make it the year or so that the waiting list is already. We talked about it tonight, DH and I, and we think we'll save to do a private cycle hopefully late this year (we'll have to save hard!), and then we can do a couple of frozen cycles hopefully, and if we're still waiting, then we can have a break before doing a public cycle. That's the plan anyway!

Did you notice how there seemed to be two sets of people at the seminar ...those that had obviously knew what they were up against, and others that had absolutely no idea.

I really hope you weren't the girl who asked if PGD would pick up ADD, because that stunned me completely.

BUT, I absolutely *loved* the Maori guy who gave his wife a shove and said "See? I told you!" when Simon confirmed for him that reasonable drinking wouldn't really cause problems. There seemed to be something special about that couple.

My DH does shift as well, but his day was just starting! It was me whose eyes were hanging out

Both of us were completely cross-eyed and with sore butts too by the end of the seminar ...those BB's chairs were HIDEOUS! In fact, we were a little early, so I think my bum had gone to sleep before the seminar even started!

When we did the tour of the clinic, it was just us and another couple, and when the nurse said that blood tests etc are before 9am, the other lady asked if it had to be before 9am, or could she do it later in the day...? The nurse said, no, before 9am, and the lasy screwed her face up and said she had amajor problem with mornings! I thought to myself, do you want a baby, or don't you??

What I actually said was "Weellll ...you'll find it interesting with a baby then, won't you?" Meow. She missed the sarcasm, but DH gave me a shove for it (I wouldn't have said it if she hadn't already made noises about the problem being getting out of bed, as opposed to work committments or whatever)

Oh Ginger I have to laugh at the lady who has a problem with having bloodtests before 9am! Sounds like she doesn't want a baby enough just yet! I think I would have made the same comment that you did!

I didnt ask any questions - was too chicken as I thought I would cry!

There was definately a split you are right. I felt like the lady over the side wall was just asking questions for the sake of it - nothing to do with her own situation. She probably doesnt have a situation and only went to ask silly questions.

Im flabbergasted that someone would go to an infertility clinic supposedly wanting a baby, then turn around and say "dont do mornings". Bizarre.

One thing I didnt realise and its probably because we havent investigated IVF much, that if you get pregnant on your 1st cycle of IVF, then you cant do another publicly funded. That must mean alot of couples would only be able to have one child. (One is better than none though I guess).

We contacted FA today and are going to get swapped over. I like that you actually get allocated to someone so you dont feel like another number. I feel like they actually care. But if/when we get to IVF stage and we want it publicly funded, we will have to transfer back. However if we have to pay for 1 IVF private we can stay with them.

Its a shame we didnt meet Ginger, atleast there would have been two (or 4) like minded people in there

wow sounded like a very intresting seminar!

We got refered to fertility + at the end of last year and had an appointment mid jan where the specialist ( i didnt realise that you got what ever specialist how bizzare! ) suggested our course of action, by starting at the bottom and working our way up basically! So thats waht we are doing!
Good luck with the saving ginger! What a great christmas pressie it will be to start the ivf process!!!

Star i know someone who was doing public funding ivf and had a positive pregnancy test after treatment but then sadly lost the baby, They were 'allowed' their 2nd publicly funded course but had to go back on the waiting list because there was a pregnancy after the first one.
Did you get swaped over to FA through public funding or are you doing private to start off with?

If you have a live birth than you can not have the 2nd IVF publicly funded. Thats horrible that they had to go back on the waiting list.

We are going to go private with them for a few reasons:
1, 2nd opinion
2, we will pay for IUI or clomiphene and save our IVF treatment for publicly funding
3, they seem to care more especially the age thing.

F+ told me I dont have to worry about my fertility chances decreasing until you are 40yrs but FA were more concerned about age so I have decided to take action now (Im nearly 33 plus getting impatient ). That way I think I have 7 yrs to get pregnant instead of only 3 if I wait for funding.

Dont get me wrong F+ were absolutely brilliant when I had my lap and dye, and they are nice too. Its just that I want to hurry things along.

Noodle how long have you been trying?

Hi Star
Dont blame you for wanting to hurry things along! This TTC game wears thin on ya paitents!! Hopefully Fertility Associates can work wonders for you!!! I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya!

We have been trying for coming up 20 months, I have got PCOS and DH has a mild male fertility issue. So hopefully something will happen some time soon!
