Topic: Baby Monitors - Help? Posted: 05 September 2011 at 10:49pm |
Hi there, anyone able to recommend a baby monitor? Was going to go the normal sound monitor route but then found out about the sound and movement monitors such as Angelcare and wondering if anyone has any advice on whether these are worthwhile and if so, which model to buy? Help is much appreciated, thanks!

We have an angelcare monitor, which we used for about the first 9 months or so. I wouldn't be without it. Working in health I have seen babies stop breathing. I think it is an extra safety measure. I would have hated for anything to happen, when I knew I could have been using the monitor..
Thankfully the only times it ever went off were when DS had rolled up the top end of the cot.

Totally recommend the Angelcare monitors! We have them for our twins and with prem babies they were a godsend cos my wee girl used to set it off regularly when she first came home.
For me it was about being able to relax, safe in the knowledge the monitor would alert me so I didn't need to be checking on them every 5 mins.
They have pretty good resale value too.

I got an orcom one (no video or sound sensors) and it has a temp gauge that beeps when the temp gets too hot or too cold in the room. Most annoying feature ever. The room gets under 16 degrees (the lowest you can set it at) and its beep, beep, beep, beep. Other then that most annoying feature the moniter itself is pretty good, plays lullabys and has a night light and a push to talk button (fun for toddlers maybe? 'get back in bed!') and you can record your own voice singing or white noise and you can operate all that from outside babies room. But that temp beep thing makes me want to smash it.

Bowie - I have the same monitor, you can turn the beeping off. It's in the temperature settings, you turn the alert off in there.
I really like the Orcom one too...particularly the temperature sensor...and the lullabys have put DS back to sleep a couple of times. I personally didn't feel the need for the sound and movement one, but if you want an added level of peace of mind then it might be the one for you. But DS slept in our room in his hammock until around 4mths and after that I found the standard type monitor enough.

Our Angelcare's are #AC401. I don't know what the different models features are but I imagine there is a newer one now - we purchased new in 2010.
They have many of the features mentioned above but no lullaby's

You can!?? You LIFESAVER!!! I forgot to turn it off last night and it woke me at 2am beeping because his room was 13 degrees. He sleeps in my room at night. Anyway - genius!

I have an AC401 and wouldn't be without it. DS stopped breathing a couple of times when he first came home from hospital and I don't even want to think about what would have happened if we didn't have this monitor. I did feel a bit paranoid but working in health I've seen what can happen and I definitely do not regret buying it.

I vote angel care monitor also. I know it sounds over the top and expensive, and heaps of babies do fine without them. While pregnant I refused to buy one, because it is just being paranoid if you have a healthy baby.
But the day my little boy was born on our way home in the afternoon with him we stopped off at baby shop to buy one. I can't explain it, but I felt that I needed that peace of mind that he is okay. In my view we buy carseats to protect our precious little bundles incase of that small remote chance they are in an accident, why not this? They will spend much more time in their cot. My little boy is 8 months now and I still love the peace of mind.
Sometimes if I can't decide on something, I take the choice of least regret. What choice could I potentially regret more in years to come.
PS: I do think Mothers are made to be worriers :-)

We love our Angel as well - as bubs slept quite long periods from early on I found I wasn't rushing in checking she was still breathing and so I also slept well! We have the AC401, got it on a good special from www.littlehedgehog.co.nz. I think the next model up has two handsets but we didn't need that.

We have the angle care 401 too. I love it - very reassuring to see the little movement bar swinging to and fro.
Also love the temperature display and the night light on the base unit. We got ours 20% off in a sleep store sale, so if you have time to shop around and wait for a sale you could save quite a bit.

We have an angelcare too, love it - means I can sleep peacefully and not worry. I actually just bought a spare one esp for travelling as we are away a lot, and have a respisense clip on one for #2 when it arrives as we don't really need the sound monitor cos only live in a small house - and accidently found out a while back I can hear the AC all the way down the driveway cos I forgot to turn it off when I got DD up!
We only have the old model 201 with 2 pads, which is fine for what we need. Only prob is if you were using it for sound too, they can be really staticy, i imagine the 401 is an improvement on that

My friend suggested a video monitor so you don't need to pop in to check then bubs doesn't see you and want to get up after say one sleep cycle when they should have two or whatever... can anyone suggest one? She is in the UK so would like NZ ideas.

Just thought I'd post here that the sleep store has 20% of everything with the coupon 20ALL until midnight Tuesday. They sell the Angel Care monitors - so could be quite a good saving.

I'm an angel care fan too. bubs ended up sleeping on his tummy from about 4mnths to help with his wind and it was fantastic - helped keep my mind at ease!!

Hi all
With the Angel ones, do you put the sensor pads underneath the mattress? The reason I ask is that there was a bassinet on TM and they said they had a hole is the mattress from where they had the baby monitor sensor in there? Can someone please clarify exactly what the deal is... Thanks heaps,
