So, just wondering if anyone has tips about whether or not to read parenting books? And if so, which ones? Cheers.

Anything written by Diane Levy is brilliant (she does lots of parenting columns in magazines as well)

Depends on your parenting style or what style you want to follow. I also like Diane Levy and also Nigel Latta. Both are honest, no nonsence and best of all, KIWIS!!! Ian and Mary Grant write alot of parenting books, and hwile there is some good stuf in them, I find them kind of...yeah, not my thing.
I also say take everything with a grain of salt, and take bits and peices taht suit you and your family from each.
You can't parent out of a book, though, and it is very hard to (and a bit silly IMHO) to lay everything out in we will/will not statements when you can't possibly know what you are in for and how you will react!

I read one (sorry can't remember the name of it) but to be honest it coloured my expectation of what to expect...and every child is different! So for me, it's a no!

I got two parenting books when I was pregnant, one my friend loved but I hated! It was too strict, like running an army (IMHO). I really liked Tracy Hogg, Secrets of the Baby Whisperer and I still refer to it sometimes. We like her style, it fits with our family. So I say yep for us it was helpful ... once I read the right one for our family ... I also think I found a book useful as I don't have any family around to help out, so I think it also depends on your situation and support, and like fattartsrock says ... take it all with a pinch of salt. I also find these forums really useful when you aren't quite sure ... but again, all with a pinch of salt

Chris Green's books babies and toddler taming are wonderful.... they are real, honest and a great look into what life might be like. If you get them you will refer back to them many times as you go through different things. I think ultimately you go your own way but these books really helped me a lot :)
